There are several games across Florida this week, but perhaps none bigger than three-time defending 3A state champion Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna against defending 2A state champions Hialeah Champagnat Catholic.

While much of south Florida is still playing a waiting game, at least two schools will begin the 2020 season this evening.

Perhaps the most interesting matchup in Florida this week will take place in Hollywood – when three-time defending 3A state champion Chaminade-Madonna will play host to defending 2A state champs Champagnat Catholic, winners of two of the past three state crowns.

In this Covid-19 landscape, no fans will be admitted to this evening’s game in an area that has been home to some of the highest rate of the Coronavirus over the past four plus months.

With all of Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach public schools not getting the go-ahead to practice or condition together, this quality area remains shut down to football, leaving such powers and defending state champions such as Miami Booker T. Washington (4A), Miami Northwestern (5A), Miami Central (6A) and Miami Christopher Columbus (8A) not able to defend their titles. Northwestern has won the past three state championships.

Hialeah Champagnat Catholic and head coach Hector Clavijo and Dameon Jones and his three-time defending 3A state champions will kick things off – featuring programs who have won five state titles in six years.

The Lions of Chaminade-Madonna (12-2 a year ago) welcome back some elite football talent – like University of Miami-bound seniors in running back Thaddius FranklinThaddiusFranklin6'2" | RBHollywood Chaminade-Madonna | 2021StateFL and defensive lineman Allan HayeAllanHaye6'1" | DLHollywood Chaminade-Madonna | 2021FL Jr. In addition, recent Ohio University commitment Torrie Cox Jr. and a group of underclassmen are expected to make another run this season.

Underclassmen such as juniors Kenyatta Johnson, Brian DilworthBrianDilworth6'0" | DBHollywood Chaminade-Madonna | 2022StateFL, Jamaal JohnsonJamaalJohnson6'2" | DLHollywood Chaminade-Madonna | 2022StateFL, Dylan ReidDylanReidLBHollywood Chaminade-Madonna | 2022FL, Khelyan Martin-Brown, Ryan Turner, Jordan Lynch, Kalunj Matthew, and sophomores Elvin Harris, D’Angelo Ponds, British Mithell, Deandre Duffus and Jason Hammond will give this program plenty of talent this coming season.

Champagnat is coming off a 10-3 season – and like Chaminade-Madonna, these Lions are also stacked with quality talent as well – with some new faces on both sides of the ball.

Class of 2021 standouts such as:

Cass of 2022 receivers Jaylin Terzado, Shayon WaltonShayonWaltonWRHialeah Champagnat Catholic | 2022FL and Benson Prosper are impressive. So are 2023 receiver Kelvin Blount, and Class of 2024 center Matthew Rubio, who started as an 8th grader a year ago.
