Cherokee defeated Sequoyah 41-20 on Friday night and moved to 2-0 behind the efforts of its passing game and put the finishing touch on the victory using the ground attack. Although the final score wasn’t indicative of Sequoyah’s performance, several Chiefs’ players were standouts as well.
CHEROKEE
Adarrius Harshaw Adarrius Harshaw 5'9" | 155 lbs | WR Cherokee | 2022 State GA , WR, Class of 2022
Harshaw was quiet in the season-opener with two catches for five yards, but there as a concerted effort to get the speedy receiver more involved this past week. Harshaw (5’10” and 160) exploded with a career-high 178 yards on six catches (29.7 average) to go along with one touchdown. His 55-yard touchdown reception on Cherokee’s opening possession got the scoring started and throughout the game, he displayed his run-after-the-catch ability. More than once, Harshaw took screen passes for big gains and with an elite prospect throwing him passes there should be more of this to come for this talented junior.
Player of the Game: @slimmharshaw
This speedy Jr. caught six balls for a game-high 177 yards (29.5 avg) with a TD and was a key to opening up the other weapons in Cherokee’s offense.

A.J. Swann A.J. Swann 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Cherokee | 2022 State GA , QB, Class of 2022
Swann should be rising up recruiting rankings if he’s not already. The strong-armed junior finished the night with 367 yards and four touchdowns on 19-for-28 passing. He found four different receivers for scores and with multiple upcoming opponents ranked in the state’s top 10 Swann should have plenty of opportunities to shine. Troy has offered but several Power 5 schools are showing interest including Virginia Tech, Louisville, Maryland, South Carolina and South Florida.

Braesen Parker, LB, Class of 2021
Even with the Warriors facing a Wing-T offense, Parker’s numbers were still impressive. The senior middle linebacker finished with a game-high 17 tackles on Friday night including one tackle for loss. Parker (5’11” and 210 pounds) set a program record for tackles in a season as a junior and holds offers from several Division III programs including Birmingham Southern, Alleghany College and Berry College among others.
SEQUOYAH
Jaden Mitchell, RB, Class of 2021
Mitchell has been Sequoyah’s leading weapon this season and it continued on Friday night as he recorded 59 yards rushing on 14 carries to go along with 53 yards receiving on seven receptions. His 18-yard touchdown reception was in the first quarter was his fourth total touchdown of the season (two rushing, two receiving). Mitchell (5’10” and 185 pounds) holds offers from NAIA program Trine University and DIII Mt. Saint Joseph University.

Jack Blackman, DB, Class of 2021
Blackman earned all-county and all-region honors as a junior and through two games he seemed to have picked up right where he left off. The rangy safety recorded Sequoyah’s first interception of the season and finished with a team-high 11 tackles. Blackman (6’ and 185 pounds) is the team’s leading tacker through two games (17 tackles) and holds interest from DIII Huntingdon College.
Steven Zurita, K, Class of 2021
Late on the scene, Zurita may be a big-time sleeper in the specialist category. In his first season of organized football, Zurita looks like a seasoned varsity starter. On the season, he’s 2-for-2 on field attempts and 7-for-7 on his PATs. He hit from 49 and 43 yards against Cherokee and put every kickoff into the endzone. Even in a loss and in his first season as a full-time varsity starter, Zurita stood out.
