The team came up on the losing end of their match up against Worth County, as the final score was 20-30. Despite the team’s overall performance and loss, the game ball for this match up still goes to a Rutland High School football player. Jessie Phelps, Rutland’s starting RB had a strong showing against Worth County, and did everything in his power to help his team win the game.
Jessie Phelps- 5’8 205 RB
While Phelps had a great game this past Friday, unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to get his team the win. Phelps toted the rock 36 times, and finished the game with a total of 307 yards, and 2 TD’s. While he may not be the biggest prospect, his frame definitely helps him to sustain some of the hits that he takes. Nevertheless, he finds ways to effectively run in between the tackles, and to shed willing tacklers as he makes his way up the field. Phelps also does not have the long speed you would want in a RB, but he gets the job done. While he runs very high, and can be tight hipped at times, he definitely shows the ability to further grow and develop into a RB that can play within Division II football.
Phelps also had a great dame against Luella during week one of the football season. He rushed the ball 23 times for 247 yards and a TD. He also had 3 receptions for 12 yards. While the team also lost this game, his statistics are proof that he is a reliable player. Hopefully, as the season progresses, college coaches will take notice of this, and offer him opportunities to benefit their program. We certainly think he is worthy of such things.
