Every Monday, we break down the top ten games across the state of Oklahoma. It’s week five and district play is in full swing. However, because of some cancellations, we’ve had some impromptu non-district games that are extremely noteworthy. Check back every Monday for another look at the top ten games across Oklahoma.
1) BIXBY (3-0) AT CARL ALBERT (3-0)
What an absolute heavyweight fight we have here. Carl Albert has won the last four Class 5A state titles and Bixby has won five out of the last six Class 6A-D2 state titles. When Bixby was in 5A about 15 years ago, this was a big rivalry where Carl Albert had Bixby’s number in several playoff meetings. The battle of the dynasties happens Friday night. Stay tuned to Prep Redzone Oklahoma for more on this match-up later in the week.
2) BROKEN ARROW (2-1) AT JENKS (2-1)
Any other week and this would be the top game of the week. And in all honesty, it probably is as this is a district game that could end up deciding the district champion. Last year it didn’t decide that but these two teams played a great game that went down to the wire with Broken Arrow winning 17-15. Both teams haven’t played since week two after a bye week and their week four games being cancelled due to Covid concerns.
3) STILLWATER (3-0) AT DEL CITY (0-2)
While some other teams might have something to say about it, the district title could end up being decided right here with this week five match-up. Despite Del City coming into week five with a goose egg in the win column, this is still a highly anticipated game. Based on talent alone, it should make for some fireworks. Stillwater has looked great every time out so far. Del City will certainly have their work cut out for them to pull the upset.
4) BERRYHILL (1-1) AT VERDIGRIS (3-0)
Yet another game that could end up deciding the district championship. Berryhill has had an unconventional start to their season. They were held up by quarantines and finally began their season a few weeks ago. They’ve lost to Cushing and beat Broken Arrow’s JV squad. Verdigris has rolled to start their season and both teams come into this game with offenses that can absolutely light up the scoreboard. Expect some points in this one.
5) SPIRO (3-0) AT CASCIA HALL (3-1)
The winner here will be in a good position in district play with top ranked Vian lurking later on in the season. The loser here might have to hit the road for the first round of the playoffs as this district is absolutely loaded at the top. Spiro is undefeated to start their season but they certainly haven’t been tested quite like what they’ll get when they head to Tulsa to face Cascia Hall. The Commandos have completely bounced back from an earlier loss to Holland Hall.
6) SAPULPA (3-1) AT COLLINSVILLE (4-0)
Sapulpa has completely bounced back from their early loss to rival Sand Springs and have been playing outstanding football in their first season dropping down to Class 5A. This should be a very entertaining game as both teams have been playing great football, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Just like in a lot of the games this week, the winner here will be in a very good position when it comes to playoff seeding later this fall.
7) PERKINS-TRYON (1-2) AT HERITAGE HALL (3-1)
Some of the appeal of this game got removed last week when Anadarko knocked off Perkins-Tryon. But these two teams played a fantastic game last season that needed some late heroics from Heritage Hall to pull off the win. The Demons will certainly have that in their mind this week as they try to go on the road and hand Heritage Hall a rare second loss in the regular season. The last time the Chargers lost two in the regular season was 2013.
8) CLINTON (2-1) AT KINGFISHER (3-1)
Another game that wasn’t supposed to happen this week is Kingfisher hosting former rival Clinton. After both teams had district games get cancelled, they agreed to play one another. Kingfisher has had a great start to the season and appear to be one of the top teams in Class 3A. Clinton is trying to get back to where they were ten years ago when they were a perennial powerhouse. They’re heading in the right direction.
9) BRISTOW (2-2) AT WAGONER (4-0)
Wagoner is our top ranked team in Class 4A and come into this game as the favorite. But Bristow captured the district title from Wagoner a season ago. And while Bristow had a bumpy start to their season, they’ve won their last two and that rushing attack is starting to roll. But that plays right into Wagoner’s strength as they’ve absolutely shut opposing rushing attacks down this season. How good is the Wagoner defense, we’ll find out Friday.
10) OWASSO (4-0) AT NORMAN NORTH (2-1)
Similar to Bristow at Wagoner, this is another measuring stick game, but this time for the underdog. Norman North looked absolutely fantastic on Saturday night when they dispatched Mustang 42-14. However, now they get their shot at the defending champs, who have looked perfect all season. Owasso is facing a confident Norman North team but the Rams have been flawless this season and are the heavy favorites in 6A-D1.
