Every Monday, we break down the top ten games across the state of Oklahoma. It’s week four and the first week of district play. The games start counting towards playoff seeding. Check back every Monday for another look at the top ten games across Oklahoma.
1) CUSHING (3-0) AT TUTTLE (3-0)
We have a few 4A games on this list but this one tops it and is the top overall game this week. #3 Tuttle hosts #6 Cushing in a game that might end up deciding the district championship. Both teams have gotten out to fantastic starts and we’re excited to see this head to head clash. Cushing has a very young and extremely talented roster. How do they react to a big road test against a power like Tuttle?
2) BISHOP KELLEY (3-0) AT McALESTER (3-0)
Closely behind Cushing and Tuttle is Bishop Kelley hitting the road to take on McAlester. Both teams come into Friday’s match-up with unbeaten records and district championship aspirations. Bishop Kelley already has several big wins under their belt. This will certainly be a measuring stick game for McAlester to see how serious the Buffaloes are as a contender in the 5A state title conversation.
3) PIEDMONT (2-1) AT GUTHRIE (3-0)
In another Class 5A showdown, Piedmont hits the road to take on a Guthrie team that is coming off a bye week. Piedmont played one of the toughest non-district schedules in 5A football and the district opener isn’t an easy one. And in the brutal district that these two teams are in, a loss here could put that team on the road for the playoffs. Lot of football to be played between now and then.
4) LAWTON (3-0) AT MIDWEST CITY (2-1)
The first of two big 6A-D2 games has Midwest City hosting Lawton. The Bombers have bounced back after a tough loss to rival Carl Albert with a blowout win over Noble, before taking last week off. Lawton has been simply dominant to start their 2020 season but they haven’t gotten a challenge like they’ll face on Friday in Midwest City. The winner here stays in the district championship hunt.
5) CHOCTAW (1-2) AT BOOKER T WASHINGTON (2-1)
The other 6A-D2 showdown happens in Tulsa as Booker T Washington hosts Choctaw. Both teams played tough non-district schedules so they should be ready for the competition on Friday night. Both teams feature very talented rosters. However, in a stacked 6A-D2, the loser here could be forced to go on the road in the first round of the playoffs. This should be a very close game.
6) EDISON (1-1) AT COWETA (2-1) (Game At East Central HS)
Coweta will have to continue to be road warriors this week. For the second straight week, Coweta’s scheduled home game has been moved, due to damage at their stadium. They’ll “host” Edison at East Central’s stadium in a critical district match-up. Edison is coming out of quarantine after cancelling their week three game with Booker T Washington last week.
7) HILLDALE (3-0) AT POTEAU (1-2)
Another 4A clash featuring two ranked teams comes here as defending champion Poteau will host unbeaten Hilldale. Poteau has played a brutal non-district schedule and has some bruises to show for it. Hilldale will get their toughest challenge of the young season when they travel to Poteau, but the Hornets have been absolutely dominant so far. This will show us if Hilldale is a serious contender in 4A.
8) NORMAN NORTH (1-1) AT MUSTANG (2-1) (SAT.)
Talk about a match-up with two teams coming off polar opposite games. Mustang won a thrilling overtime game against Norman last week, where they stopped the potential game-winning two point conversion. On the other side, Norman North was outscored by Yukon 28-7 in the second half to lose to the Millers. They’ll get an extra day to prepare for this district showdown with the game happening Saturday evening.
9) UNION (0-3) AT OWASSO (3-0)
You wouldn’t think that this game is a top ten game based on the records. But Union’s non-district schedule was one of the toughest out there. Granted, their district opener is arguably the toughest game they’ll play all year as they travel to #1 Owasso. Union needs to get things going offensively after being shutout in two of their first three games. Owasso will look to continue rolling in their pursuit of another title.
10) BLANCHARD (1-2) AT JOHN MARSHALL (2-1) (THURS.)
Coming off arguably one of the biggest non-district wins we saw, John Marshall has to refocus after knocking off Heritage Hall. They open district play against Blanchard, in a match-up with two teams that have moved up from 3A to 4A. Blanchard hasn’t had the start to their season that they were hoping for. Thursday could present them with the perfect opportunity to turn things around.
