Jefferson plays on both sides of the ball for Edison, but Utah recruited him to be a linebacker. In fact, they told him he was a linebacker before he even know he was a linebacker.
“I had a conversation with Coach Mac (Kiel McDonald) when I was a freshman,” Jefferson told Brandon Huffman of 247Sports “I was a receiver at the time. Coach Mac told me, ’you don’t play receiver, you’re a million dollar linebacker’. To this day, he’s been sticking with me for three years, telling me I’m a linebacker, I’m a linebacker. So I started playing it and started balling out. He has been there ever since then. I built a relationship with the Utes and I just love them.”
Later in his recruitment, Utah linebackers coach Colton Swan began talking to Jefferson and eventually head coach Kyle Whittingham joined the conversation.
As a sophomore, Jefferson committed to USC but later withdrew his commitment.
Many schools were talking to Jefferson this summer and fall, but Utah had been checking on him more regularly.
“Fresno State, Colorado, Arizona and Arizona State were all still talking to me, but then one day, when I was talking to Utah, they asked if I’d be committing anywhere (soon),” Jefferson told Huffman. “And then the next day, I said, ’I wanted to be a Ute.’”
He is the second outside linebacker in Utah’s 2021 recruiting class, joining Jonah Elliss of Moscow Senior in Idaho. Jefferson is the second player from California in the class, along with quarterback Peter Costelli Peter Costelli 6'3" | 210 lbs | QB Mission Viejo | 2021 State CA of Mission Viejo.
