Now, Baumhover is reaping those benefits through the early portion of the season.
The Western Dubuque senior currently ranks second in the state with 697 yards passing entering Week 3. He is also fifth overall in all-purpose yards with 721.
“It’s great just to be out on the field with my friends and teammates,” Baumhover said. “We’re very grateful for the opportunity.”
The quarterback position is a legacy one in the Baumhover family.
“I spent lots of time individually with my wide receivers and got coached up by my two older brothers, who were both quarterbacks,” he said.
Baumhover and the Bobcats bounced back after a Week 1 loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier, clipping Dubuque Hempstead, 40-37. Baumhover completed 19 of 33 passes for 447 yards and five touchdowns in that victory.
On the year, he is 32-for-55 for 697 yards and seven touchdowns.
“It feels good to be amongst some of the best in the state,” he said. “It reards the hard work my teammates and I put into the offseason.”
Baumhover, who is also a standout on the basketball court, is looking to lead Western Dubuque back to a state championship. The Bobcats went 13-0 last year to claim the Class 3A title.
“Not being able to have a normal summer is actually pretty normal for me,” he said. “I’ve been doing it for my whole life. The only tough thing is juggling the sports and making sure I’m getting quality work out of each one of them.”
As for his future, Baumhover is undecided on which sport, but “I definitely know that I would like to compete at the next level regardless the sport.”
Baumhover scored 282 points with 82 assists, 72 rebounds, 40 steals and 32 made three-pointers last year on the Western Dubuque basketball team.
