There were some performances that went unnoticed, too. Let’s take a look at five underrated performances from Week 2.
Brady Kurdyla, Bridgewater-Raritan: Kurdyla and the Panthers bounced back from a tough loss to Ridge and shocked Union in a 36-28 victory. He went 13-for-20 for 115 yards and a TD and ran for 105 yards on 21 carries with three scores. He managed the game well and made plays when he had to, and Bridgewater-Raritan reaped the benefits. The Panthers host Westfield Friday night as they look to improve to 2-1.
Jason Vega, Elmwood Park: Vega had nine tackles and two sacks as Elmwood Park earned a 14-6 victory over Bogota. The win snapped a 20-game losing streak and was the program’s first win in nearly three years. Elmwood Park takes on Palisades Park Friday night as it looks to win two in a row. Elmwood Park’s last win prior to last week came against Palisades Park in 2017. Palisades Park won a 15-14 game last season between the teams.
Andrew Vernieri, Barnegat: Vernieri was a force on the defensive end for Barnegat in its 20-13 win over Shore last week. He intercepted three passes, broke up a pass in the end zone and scored on a TD run that proved to be the difference. He had seven tackles and was efficient as a two-way threat.
David Jones, Pascack Valley: Jones had three interceptions and recovered a fumble as Pascack Valley took down Bergenfield, 34-8, last Saturday. He also had a 23-yard TD reception in the victory.
Hunter Van Zant, Boonton: Boonton is off to a 2-0 start following convincing victories over Hopatcong and Whippany Park. Van Zant ran for 221 yards on 14 carries and had four TD runs, including a 65-yarder, in the team’s 41-14 win over Whippany Park last week. Van Zant has now rushed for 409 yards in two games.
