Will South Georgia prove they have the best football? Or will teams from metro-Atlanta continue to bring home the trophy. Here’s a look at a few teams who look like state title contenders.
Lowdnes – The south Georgia powerhouse just had a Covid-19 outbreak that has put the program on hold, but before that, they looked like a team on a mission. Led by elite 2022 quarterback Jacurri Brown Jacurri Brown 6'4" | 205 lbs | QB Lowndes | 2022 State GA , the Vikings have been dominant all season so far, starting 5-0 while scoring at least 33 points in each game so far. Lowdnes beat up on two metro-Atlanta teams to start the season (Archer and Griffin), and won a critical rivalry game last weekend against Valdosta. While their offense can be unstoppable at times, their defense has also played well, having held each opponent this year under 22 points. If they keep playing well on both sides of the ball, they’ll be tough to handle for any teams in the playoffs.
Grayson – After winning the state championship in 2017, the Rams are back and looking to win it all once again. The 5-0 Rams have been through the ringer so far this year, playing a tough schedule and making it look easy. Their offense, led by Clemson running back commitment Phil Mafah Phil Mafah 6'1" | 213 lbs | RB Grayson | 2021 State GA , have been great so far, but dipped a little in last weekend’s 20-13 win over Mill Creek. IF they make it to the title game, it will be because of their defense. They held an outstanding Collins Hill offense to just 7 points and have given up only 27 points over the last three games.
Colquitt County – Another South Georgia team to know its the powerhouse Colquitt County. The 4-0 Packers are always in the state championship hunt and will be back fighting for it again in 2020. They haven’t had the toughest schedule through their first four games, but they’ve been dominant in every way. Their high-powered offense has scored over 50 points three times already, and have a chance to do it again this weekend against winless Alcovy. The final half of their season will be tough as they will play both Camden County and Lowdnes over the next few weeks.
Norcross- Heading back to metro Atlanta, the Norcross Blue Devils have turned their program around and are looking to get back into the state championship discussion like they were just about every year in the 2000’s. They aren’t the most talented team, but they play together well and are extremely well coached. Like Colquitt County, they haven’t played the toughest schedule so far, but 5-0 is still 5-0. They are running through their region with ease so far, and they shouldn’t have a ton of problems with 04- Berkmar this year. Senior quarterback Mason Kaplan has come into his own this year, throwing for 969 yards and 10 touchdowns with zero interceptions. If he continues to take care of the football, the Blue Devils could be tough to beat for the rest of the regular season.
Brookwood – If the Rams are going to get tripped up in region play, the Broncos could be the team to do it. At 5-0, Brookwood has beaten some good teams so far this year including Walton, Marietta, Dacula, and Mill Creek. With pass-happy offense led by sophomore standout Dylan Lonergan Dylan Lonergan 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB Brookwood | 2023 State GA , the Broncos have been able to throw on just about every defense in the state. They have two D1 wide receivers in the 2022 class who are already two of the state’s best. Four-star defensive back Marquis Groves-Killebrew Marquis Groves-Killebrew 6'0" | 180 lbs | DB Brookwood | 2022 State GA , a future Georgia Bulldog, leads the defense from his cornerback spot. Their schedule will only get tougher from here, but expect the Broncos to have a deep run in the playoffs.
