Overview:
On Oct 9, 2020, I took a trip to Caledonia, about 20 minutes south of Grand Rapids, to watch a few stud players for the Fighting Scots and Golden Eagles. Both teams specialise in running the football, playing great defence, and mistake free football, which this game did not disappoint on those expectations. After a slow first half, liftoff happened for the Golden Eagles, coming and scoring two quick touchdowns in the 3rd quarter to gain separation, which turned out to be the deciding factor in this defensive matchup. That’s not to say Caledonia did not keep things interesting, after a shallow punt and great field position, the Scots took over, knocking on the Eagles 35 yard line, until a late interception thrown by Caledonia Quarterback Mason McKenzie killed that possession and the Scots never got closer than that when they entered the fourth quarter, eventually throwing another interception with 5:12 left in the fourth, as the Eagles won in this contest against the Fighting Scots 17-7 in a defensive showdown.

6-1 SR 200 #34(Caledonia Running Back)- After earning all-state honours last year. VanderHoff is proving last year was not a fluke. VanderHoff, the main feature of the offense for the Scots in this contest, accounted for a touchdown and rushed for 78 yards in Caledonia’s loss to the Hudsonville Eagles.
Caleb Paarlberg 6-0 JR 258 #64(Caledonia Tackle)- Making big tackle after big tackle, Paarlberg accounted for 10 tackles, 4 for loss for the Fighting Scots, becoming a force on the offensive and defensive line. Paarlberg is the anchor for the Scots on defensive line and has a high motor and the ability to get off the ball and make the tackle.
Dylan Ham 5-10 JR 150 #21(Hudsonville Receiver)- Ham has exceptional speed, accounting for an 87 yard touchdown and putting the Eagles in some great field position throughout the entire game. Also returning a punt to the house mid-way into the 3rd quarter to sharpen the Eagles lead 17-7. Also, sniffing out plays and quick screens and swing passes as a cornerback. Earning tonight’s player of the game.
Nick Fox 6-1 JR 170 #24(Caledonia Wide Receiver)- Nick Fox has tremendous athletic ability and a reliable weapon in the receiver game for the Scots. Fox had a few great catches on Friday in Caledonia’s loss against the Eagles.
Emmanuel Dieppa 6-0 JR 165 #17 (Hudsonville Kicker)- Made a 33 yard field goal and accounting for 4 touchbacks for the Eagles, showing off his exceptional field goal and punting ability controlling the field position for the Eagles.
Nate St. John 6-0 SR 170 #11 (Hudsonville Safety)-“St John this St John that with the tackle.” Nate St John is the staple stop of the Eagles Defence, coming up with tackle after tackle, whatever he can do to be a leader and a perfect example of how to play the position of linebacker, St John is very quick off the ball and making every defensive tackle or being near the play. St. John, was everywhere on the field, contributing 13 tackles and a big interception, to seal the game, in the Eagles win at Caledonia.
