The Albuquerque Public School district consists of 13 public high schools and two private schools that play football (Albuquerque Academy and St. Pius X). It’s important to note the APSD does not include Rio Rancho, Bernalillo, Los Lunas or Belen, so the schools located in those towns will not be included in these rankings.
Nick Petty Nick Petty 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB Eldorado | 2021 State NM , Eldorado: Who’s the best quarterback in Metro Albuquerque? Petty is arguably the guy. He impressed this summer on the camp circuit with his mobility and strong throwing arm. His 2019 film contains some great throws but he appeared in just four games and attempted 38 passes with four TD passes. Eldorado will need Petty to step up in a challenging district featuring Clovis, La Cueva, Manzano and Sandia. The spring duel between Petty and Clovis QB Chance Harris Chance Harris 6'0" | 195 lbs | QB Clovis | 2021 State NM (Colorado State commit) will be much-see high school football.
Ryan Cook Ryan Cook 6'0" | 180 lbs | QB La Cueva | 2021 State NM , La Cueva: Originally from Alamogordo, Cooks is the heir apparent to Austin Smith, who threw for 3,174 yards and 31 touchdowns last season as the Bears finished 8-4 while defending their 2018 Class 6A crown. Cook attempted only four passes last season as Smith’s backup, but his film is impressive enough that colleges have already offered (College of Wooster in Ohio is the latest).
Aden Chavez, Cibola: When you watch Chavez play and closely examine his numbers, it’s difficult to believe he’s just a sophomore. In 6 games as a freshman last season, Chavez threw for nearly 1,500 yards and 13 touchdowns. Makes you wonder what kind of numbers Chavez would put up in a full 10-game season. Perhaps we’ll know the answer to that question next fall.
Adrian Marquez, Del Norte: The senior threw for 832 yards and four touchdowns as a junior in 2019. He‘ll be key if the Knights want to post a winning record in the spring with Belen and Los Lunas in its district.
A.J. Rivera, Albuquerque Academy: Another sophomore who posted impressive numbers as a freshman in 2019. In fact, his numbers are very similar to Chavez. In 10 games, Rivera threw for 1,476 yards and 12 touchdowns. Cut down on the interceptions (13 in 2019) and the 6-foot-2, 195-pound Rivera will begin to be courted by college recruiters.
Honorable Mention: Daniel Ayala Daniel Ayala 6'0" | 190 lbs | QB West Mesa | 2022 State NM (West Mesa); Cian Jones (St. Pius X); Andrew Lopez (Valley).
