A handful of byes were handed out, but others will be looking to punch their ticket into the next round and move one step closer to the UNI-Dome.
Here’s a look at those games on deck this week:
Clear Lake at Garner-Hayfield/Ventura
After playing each other in each of the past six seasons, Clear Lake and Garner-Hayfield/Ventura collide this year in the playoffs.
The Lions have won the last three, escaping last season with a 28-27 victory.
However, Garner-Hayfield/Ventura holds home-field advantage in this one.
Joe Pringnitz has rushed for 733 yards and scored 11 touchdowns for the Cardinals, with Evan Sloan anchoring the defense with 6.5 sacks.
Clear Lake’s Carson Toebe, a standout on the basketball court, directs the Lion offense. Toebe has thrown for 1,181 yards with 12 touchdowns, adding 314 and six scores on the ground.
The winner meets Spirit Lake, which received a bye.
Cherokee at Algona
Several years ago, Cherokee was one of the first teams in the state to embrace the spread offense. That is no longer the case, as Cael Wood leads the Braves with 258 yards rushing.
They will face a stern test in Algona this week and quarterback Tyler Manske Tyler Manske 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Algona | 2022 State IA .
Last year, the Bulldogs reached the state semifinals. Manske has thrown for 815 yards and 11 TD, adding another 452 and four scores on the ground.
His junior classmate, Trevon Smith, has become a key figure on offense. Smith has 15 catches for 264 yards with seven TDs, adding another 308 yards and three scores on the ground.
Either Okoboji or Estherville-LC will take on the winner of this one.
Hampton-Dumont/CAL at Iowa Falls-Alden
North Central Conference rivals meet in Iowa Falls with the Bulldogs taking on the Cadets.
Junior Cal Heeren has thrown for almost 700 yards with five TDs to lead Hampton-Dumont/CAL as four receivers have over five catches and 10 yards.
The Cadets are paced by Samuel Off and Kaden Sharar. Off has thrown for 988 yards on almost 60 percent completion with Sharar running for 816 and 11 scores.
Iowa Falls-Alden won the first battle between these two with Sharar rushing for 146 and two scores.
A second round meeting with either Roland-Story or Independence awaits.
