Chilly temperatures greeted those that battled it out last week to advance, and that will likely be the case again around the state.
But on the gridiron, the action should be hot and intense as everybody wants to take that next step towards making the UNI-Dome.
Here’s a look at the matchups involving north-central Iowa teams this week in Class A prep football:
Madrid at West Hancock
Madrid pulled one of the bigger surprises when they earned a 41-38 victory at St. Edmond. The reward for the Tigers: defending state champion West Hancock.
The last time these teams met was in the 2011 playoffs on, ironically enough, November 11. The Eagles won, 48-38.
For Madrid, Brady Leonard was the hero last week, scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns to lead the comeback. The junior has thrown for 515 yards and rushed for another 431 with 10 combined TDs.
West Hancock’s beast is Cole Kelly. The senior leads the team with 1,400 yards and 28 touchdowns on just 154 carries. Kelly was part of a three-headed monster attack last year that led the Eagles to state glory.
They do share a common opponent, as West Hancock posted a 55-14 regular season victory over St. Edmond this season.
Ogden at Guthrie Center
A tall task awaits Ogden this week as the Bulldogs head to Grundy Center.
Ogden picked up its third consecutive victory by clipping BLCUW, 32-31, to advance. Kolby and Kaden Moorman will be the focal points, as Kolby Moorman has 578 yards passing and 715 yards rushing with 18 combined TDs.
Kaden Moorman has rushed for 732 yards and scored five times as Lane Snedden adds 20 receptions for 238 yards and three scores.
For Grundy Center, it all starts with a vaunted ground attack. Zach Opheim enters the night with 1,212 yards and 18 touchdowns, with quarterback Logan Knaack adding 728 yards on the ground and 518 yards in the air with 19 scores.
IKM-Manning at Logan-Magnolia
A district rematch takes place here with Logan-Magnolia welcoming in IKM-Manning. In the final week of the regular season, the Panthers claimed a 35-6 victory.
IKM-Manning bounced back from that loss to down Southwest Valley in the playoff opener, 34-20. They are 3-1 over the last four. Kyler Rasmussen cracked the 1,000-yard mark on the ground, rushing for 1,011 with nine scores.
Drew Doyel is a dual-threat at the skill position having run for 232 yards and caught 18 passes for 178 yards.
Since a loss to Oakland, 38-0, Logan-Magnolia has reeled off three consecutive wins. Gavin Maguire anchors a rushing attack that has 1,686 yards and 24 TDs with the junior posting a team-high 821 and 13 scores.
