The last came in 2008, completing a run that saw the E-Hawks hoist a trophy four times starting in 2000.
Now, behind a group that has secured its best win total since 2014, Emmetsburg is looking to move one step closer to title No. 10 when they travel to West Sioux this week for a third round contest.
The game is a rematch from earlier this month when Emmetsburg escaped with a 36-35 victory on its home field. To get this far, they needed to take out upset-minded Carroll Kuemper, which they did, 42-14.
Senior quarterback Ben Dunlap had a perfect night, completing all five of his pass attempts and recording three total touchdowns. He was 5-for-5 for 137 yards with two TDs in the air and one more on the ground.
“The win was great,” Dunlap said. “Everyone was ready to go from the first play. We finished 1-0 at the end of the night, which is always our goal.”
Dunlap hit Ryan Brennan on a 72-yard touchdown and also connected with Matt Wirtz for another score. He added 4.5 tackles and a pick on defense.
“My perfect throwing night was possible because of our offensive line,” Dunlap said. “They gave me great protection, which made it possible for me to find the open receivers so they could make a play. It’s awesome getting the ball to our explosive speed guys to let them get to work in the open field.”
On the season, Dunlap has 553 yards passing and seven touchdowns without an interception on 49 attempts. He’s also ran for a score and has 36 tackles with six interceptions and a fumble recovery.
