This past Sunday, September 27, I was able to attend and watch the high school athletes work out. Yet another well run event even with imminent rain didn’t stop some very good performances. With a smaller number of campers, it was nice to see them get plenty of reps. Here are the offensive and defensive linemen that stood out.
2022 Offensive guard Luke Dalton, Marian Central
I love seeing guys that want to compete, Dalton is in that group. Seeing him two days in a row shows me that there’s a want to get better. Not only that, he’s a upstanding young man, someone you’d want in your locker room. As for on the field, Dalton is well put together, but is light on his feet. The young man has a bright future ahead of him.
2021 Defensive end Kendall Thomas, Marian Catholic
A very smooth athlete with room to add on weight. Running form is solid and has good bend. Good lateral quickness and used his hands well during individual drills. Would have had much more interest if a fall season would have been played.
2021 Offensive tackle David Chinlund, Woodstock
He recently committed to SW Minnesota State, but I’d still check to see if he’s open to other opportunities. The former hockey player showed great athleticism, which wasn’t surprising with his background. Chinlund’s weight is at 250-pounds currently but he looks skinny. Although he’s a bit of a project, he’s one worth taking and the Mustangs must be ecstatic about this commitment.
2022 Defensive end Mario Grayer, Kenwood
Has a fantastic frame, long and lean right now, with room to add on good weight. Looked smooth during individual drills, but needs to work on his bend. Didn’t run the best fourty, but his first steps are quick. Lots of upside here.
2022 Offensive tackle Jaylin Caldwell, Wendell Phillips
Upside and lots of it. Caldwell has a huge frame but really needs to focus on the weight room. Long arms like his a ideal at tackle. Needs to improve footwork and balance but that will come with practice. Has the look of a future right tackle.
2021 Defensive end Cole Gelso, Ziegler-Royalton
The four hour trip north was worth it for Gelso, as he showed good quickness and lateral movement. He has a great frame but is a bit stiff. He plays in class 1A so competition level isn’t very high. Still like the upside here, but would love to see him battle some larger tackles.
