This past Sunday, September 27, I was able to attend and watch the high school athletes work out. Yet another well run event even with rain imminent. With a smaller number of campers, it was nice to see them get plenty of reps. Here are the tight ends, running backs and linebackers that stood out.
2022 Tight End Brady Tosterud, Elk Grove
Love the length at 6’4” but needs to add on some more weight. Ran well and showed solid lateral quickness. Tosterud has good hands and mostly didn’t let the ball get to his body to make the catch. Really like the upside.
2021 Linebacker Luke Zardzin, Prospect
Zardzin put up some of the best testing numbers of all the players who attended the camp. Ran a 4.6 fourty at 6’1 and 202-pounds and then put up a 3.59 second 3-cone. Has a good frame which can add on to his already solid build. Speed like Zardzin’s on defense will play and I’m a huge fan of dual-sport athletes, which he is.
2022 Running back Benjamin McLaughlin, Warren
Electric with the ball in his hands, it’s not just one move McLaughlin has it’s multiple (spin, jump cuts, and jukes). He showed impressive footwork, great lateral quickness and some solid speed. He’s got to hit the weight room, but as a rising junior, there’s time to sculpt his frame.
2022 Tight end Chris Petrucci, Maine South
The frame is great for Petrucci, 6’4” and 210-pounds, the length is impressive. Ran crips routes during individual drills and did the same during 1 v 1’s. Has good body control and uses his frame to “box” out defenders to make plays on the ball. Good hands as well, is a serious red zone threat. Not fast enough to be a true WR (he worked out with that group also), but can split out wide occasionally. Great upside.
2023 Linebacker Cole Dutkovich, Nequa Valley
Another two-sport star, baseball, Dutkovich has a very high ceiling. Already looks the part of a great linebacker at 6’1”but does need to work on his lower body strength. The upper body is solid, but lots of room to grow. Stood out during the 1 v 1’s, grabbing a pick. Dutkovich is definitely a player to watch the next few years.
2022 Linebacker Amari Conway, Wendell Phillips
Conway has a good frame at 6’ and 190-pounds, but the ability to add more weight. Great leg drive, and quick to react. Conway made a bunch of plays during the 1 v 1’s. He’s got some solid upside, especially if he’s able to keep the speed along with adding 10-15 more pounds of muscle.
