Playoff action kicks off this Friday night around the state including in eight-man.
Here’s a closer look at the games involving north-central Iowa teams set for the gridiron:
West Bend-Mallard at Newell-Fonda
The Wolverines and Mustangs have been district rivals for many years now, and met last month as well. Newell-Fonda posted a convincing 55-0 victory that night and has won nine of the past 11 in the series overall.
Led by a ground attack averaging six yards per carry, the Mustangs have marched to a 6-1 record. Gabe Sievers is your typical dual-threat quarterback, having thrown for 593 yards and rushed for another 621 with 20 combined touchdowns.
Trey Jungers is a big-play threat for the Newell-Fonda offense with 413 yards receiving and six scores on just 18 receptions.
For West Bend-Mallard, Max Fehr has 382 yards passing, Creytan Grimm 388 yards and six touchdowns rushing, and Levi Mogler 176 yards receiving.
The winner of his game will face either Ar-We-Va or Kingsley-Pierson out of Pod 2.
GT/RA at Remsen St. Mary’s
Another rematch here as GT/RA tries to pull an upset at Remsen St. Mary’s.
A few weeks back, Remsen St. Mary’s earned a convincing 45-0 victory. The Hawks are led by sophomore Jaxon Bunkers and senior Jeremy Koenck.
Bunkers has completed 46 of 65 passes for 698 yards with 12 touchdowns, adding another 253 and five scores on the ground. Koenck has 532 yards rushing, 159 yards receiving and 12 total TDs.
Damen Brownmiller is a key in the passing game with 21 receptions for 356 yards and six scores.
For GT-RA, Max Hough has 193 yards passing and 274 yards rushing, Drew Schnell has thrown for 150 yards and rushed for another 109, and Cormick Currans has 334 yards rushing and 164 yards receiving with three total TDs.
Awaiting the winner in Pod 1 will be either Boyer Valley or West Harrison.
