- DB Dane Stevenson, Mooresville
During Mooresville’s 41-24 win over Martinsville on Friday, Dane accomplished something that is rarely done in football at any level. The 6′ 160 pound Sr DB intercepted 5 passes. Talk about a ball hawk! He wasn’t a one trick player either… Stevenson added 3 catches for 56 yards and a TD on offense. The stats on the night are obviously impressive and when you turn on the film, you see why. He is an extremely instinctive player that sees the field well, has good length, and nice overall athleticism. Stevenson is currently committed to play baseball in college, but he could definitely go the football route if he would like.
- WR Bryan Lomax, Covenant Christian
Bryan had the magic touch during Covenant Christian’s 69-14 win over Park Tudor. Every time the ball touched his hands, he scored. These weren’t just 1 yard goal line runs, these were explosive plays. On the night, he had 3 receptions of 26, 32, and 80 yards that all went for TD’s. He also had a kick return on the night, and guess what? With a return of 93 yards, he scored on that too. The 6’1″ Sr proved to be a deep threat, that can stretch the field, and win down the seam. His kick return displayed his great field vision, and speed to finish the big play. He is a basketball player as well, so I am not sure which route he will go in college, but I think he is an intriguing football prospect. His skill-set makes him a player that could potentially play multiple positions at the next level, and that adds value to him as a prospect.
- RB Connor Fruits, Indian Creek
Talk about a gritty performance. Fruits carried the ball 41 times for 339 yards and 4 TD’s. The most impressive thing was that when those around him started to get tired, he seemed to get stronger as the night went on. He even scored 3 TD’s in the 4th quarter, and that is a testament to his toughness, and ability to take hits throughout the game. This was Fruits 2nd game with over 35 carries this season, and 4th game that he accounted for 4 TD’s. Indiana Creek remains undefeated in games that Fruits scores a TD, so you can see how valuable he is to this team. Big shout out to the Indian Creek OL too. With a powerful running game led by Fruits, and a solid defense, this team is built for a playoff run.
- RB Grayson Thomas, New Pal
I could be wrong, but I am pretty sure this is the first game ball that we have awarded to a freshman this season. Grayson has not played like a freshman though, especially last Friday while leading New Pal to a 28-0 win over New Castle. Thomas totaled 189 yards on 35 carries, and scored three of New Pal’s 4 TD’s. It takes a special freshman for a coach to trust handing them the ball 35 times in a game, but obviously he has earned those carries. When I see freshman put up big numbers like that, I automatically assume they are running for their life and trying not to get hit… That is certainly not the case with Thomas. In fact, he looks like a pinball at times with so many players flying off him. You see lots of yards after contact, quick cuts, and speed to go the distance. Grayson has a bright future on the field and it will be fun watching him in the coming years!
