The 6A classification is made up of some of the state’s top teams, and it’s lead by a few powerhouse programs once again.
Here are a few teams to have a great chance at making a state title run later this fall.
Buford:
As expected, the Buford Wolves are once again one of the top teams in the 6A classification. One of the most successful programs all-time in the peach state, the Wolves have bounced back in a big way after starting the season off with a loss to North Cobb. Since that 28-14 loss, the Wolves have been on a tear, winning their last 4 games in impressive fashion. Buford defeated Carver 39-6, then beat Clarke Central 48-0, throttled Central Gwinnett 51-0, and then beat up on poor Habersham Central 44-7.
Just looking at the scores, it’s easy to notice the defense. The Wolves have always had pride in their defense, and this 2020 group could be the best they’ve had in quite a while. They may not have as many D1 prospects as they usually do, but this Buford team is playing together well and don’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. They should skate through the rest of the regular season against Shiloh, Lanier, Winder Barrow, and Dacula before the playoffs come around.
Lee County:
The South Georgia powerhouse couldn’t handle 7A championship contender Lowndes earlier this year, but the Trojans have been extremely impressive in every other game so far this year. Their defense, led by linebacker/safety Jaron Willis, has been exceptional all season other than the Lowndes game. The Trojans defense shut out their first two opponents before giving up 38 to the high-powered Lowndes offense led by superstar QB Jacurri Brown Jacurri Brown 6'4" | 205 lbs | QB Lowndes | 2022 State GA .
The Trojans bounced back in a big way and have won their last three games, with the last two coming against a good Warner Robins team and another talented Tift County team. If you win consistently in South Georgia, it means your tough and well coached. That’s exactly what you get from Lee County every single year, and they should make a deep run in the playoffs when the time comes.
Valdosta:
They may be only 3-2, but you can never count out a Rush Propst team in the regular season. They lost to two 7A powers so far this year in Lowndes and Colquitt County, but they’ve taken care of business against every other 6A opponent. They are the winningest high school program in the country, and they play as tough as anyone out there. Like Lee County, Valdosta is a team full of hard-nosed, tough football players who live and breath high school football. Losing star QB Jake Garcia was a big loss after he was ruled ineligible, but the Wildcats are still a team to be feared the rest of the way.
Other 6A programs to keep an eye on in the playoffs are Lovejoy (6-0), Westlake (5-1), and Richmond Hill (6-1).
