Teams around the state began their march to the UNI-Dome this week. The state made the decision to include almost every program for the first time this year.
Some were given byes based off who they played during the regular season, but for others, the crisp, cool fall weather was greeted by intense action on the gridiron.
Lipsey, Ames Run Wild
Tamin Lipsey is going to be a superstar on the basketball court very soon at the major Div. I level. And probably beyond that.
But right now, he is showing off his athleticism on the football field for Ames.
Lipsey, a quarterback for the first time this season, ran for a school-record 346 yards including a 99-yard touchdown run as the Little Cyclones topped Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 35-31.
The talented junior also completed 15 of 24 passes for 139 yards, accounting for five total touchdowns. Earlier this season against Fort Dodge, Lipsey had 369 yards passing, 203 yards rushing and eight total scores.
Next for Ames will be Class 4A favorite Southeast Polk.
Central City-Central Elkader Light Up The Night
Most nights, scoring 60 points will result in a victory. That was not the case for Central Elkader, as Central City earned the 62-60 triumph.
Aiden Klostermann, a freshman to keep an eye on, ran for 229 yards and four scores to lead the Wildcats, who scored 27 points in the third quarter.
For Central Elkader, Evan Schroeder threw for 104 yards, ran for 121 and had three touchdowns. Hazen Loan was on the receiving end of five passes for 138 yards and two scores.
Mohawks Earn First Playoff Win In 18 Years
The last time Mason City captured a postseason victory, many of the players on the team were not even born yet.
For the first time since 2002, the Mohawks scored a win in the playoffs, downing Gilbert, 16-14.
Ben Amundson put together a memorable night, carrying the ball 42 times for 169 yards and both touchdowns. Kale Hobart threw for 104 yards and Carter Thomas went over 100 yards receiving.
Walker Throws 7 TD Passes
Panorama’s Domonic Walker had himself a night, throwing seven touchdowns passes as the Panthers improved to 6-2 with a 53-8 victory over East Marshall.
Walker, a senior, completed 14 of 16 passes for 370 yards. He hit Drew Taylor four times for 113 yards and a score with Preston Walker adding 73 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
What made it even more incredible was all of Walker’s damage came in the first half.
Panorama raced out to a 33-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.
Matson Carries Humboldt
Caden Matson continued to have a breakout season, as the Humboldt junior led the Wildcats to a 40-17 victory over Sioux City Heelan.
Matson completed 10 of 19 passes for 233 yards with three touchdowns while rushing for 165 yards and three more scores. He also led the team with 9.5 tackles on defense.
Gabe Gidel had four receptions for 146 yards and two touchdowns for Humboldt.
Nathan Favors, a senior, finished his career at Sioux City Heelan with 188 yards passing and 88 yards rushing with two total scores.
Forest City Escapes
Reese Moore scored the lone touchdown of the game as Forest City survived to advance with a 7-0 victory over New Hampton.
Moore ran for 94 yards on 28 carries, with Carter Bruckhoff throwing for 44 yards. Moore’s TD came in the fourth quarter as the defense pitched a shutout.
Sharar, Cadets March On
Karson Sharar had 219 yards on 35 carries including two touchdowns as Iowa Falls-Alden knocked off Hampton-Dumont/CAL, 28-18.
Samuel Off tossed a pair of touchdown passes to Blake Janssen.
For the Bulldogs, Cal Heeren threw for 201 yards and two scores while Mario De La Cruz made 17 tackles including two for loss and recovered a fumble on defense.
Fidone, Lewis Central Cruise
Thomas Fidone Thomas Fidone 6'5" | 225 lbs | TE Lewis Central | 2021 State IA , one of the top players in the state of Iowa, had four receptions for 111 yards with two touchdowns as Lewis Central had no problems with Creston, 63-12.
Fidone, who has committed to Nebraska, made several nice connections with sophomore Braylon Kammrad, who was 13 of 15 passing for 238 yards with six touchdowns. Ethen Fishell carried the ball three times fro 112 yards with a score.
