There have been some great performances so far, but there have been a few players that have separated from the pack in the race for Mr. Football (top senior in MN). My colleague Oliver James West and I both put together our own pre season Mr. Football watchlists, but let’s see how the race has shaped out through three weeks.
Trey Feeney Trey Feeney 6'2" | QB Moorhead | 2021 State MN , QB, Moorehead:
- 65.6% 955 yds, 16 TDs, 1 INT
- 12 car, 42 yds
It is fair to say that Moorehead’s senior QB has well earned the top spot on this list. In week one, Fenney finished with 400+ passing yards and six touchdowns… in only ONE HALF. He has only backed up that performance with 547 passing yards and 10 touchdowns combined in the previous two weeks. The 6’2″ North Dakota commit has lit the state of Minnesota on fire and it is fair to say that he is the prohibited favorite to take home this year’s Mr. Football.
Nick Flaskamp Nick Flaskamp LB Minneapolis Southwest | 2021 State MN , RB/LB, Minneapolis Southwest
- 61 car, 565 yds, 3 TDs
- 43 TTcks, 11 TFLs, 0.5 sacks, 1 FumTD
Nick Flaskamp Nick Flaskamp LB Minneapolis Southwest | 2021 State MN found his way onto Oliver’s preseason list, but surprisingly not mine and I guess he took that as motivation. Minneapolis Southwest’s senior leader has made his presence felt across the state this season. He has dominated from the backfield averaging a ridiculous 9.3 yards per carry, for 565 total yards on the ground. Flaskamp’s true success has come on the defensive side of the ball where he has recorded a reported state leading, 43 tackles this season. He has proved to be arguably the most dominant two-way player in Minnesota this season.
Terrance Kamara Terrance Kamara 5'9" | RB Minneapolis North | 2021 State MN , RB, Minneapolis North
- 53 car, 585 yds, 4 TDs
- 5 rec, 132 yds, 2 TDs
Kamara was the prohibited Mr. Football favorite to begin the season, and he has not done anything to lose that distinction rather his opposition has performed so well to overtake the Polar RB. After finishing third in the state with 1,474 rushing yards and fourth in touchdowns with 22 last season, Kamara was primed for a monster senior year. After a slow start (for his ridiculous standards) the senior playmaker exploded for 371 yards from scrimmage and three total touchdowns in week three against Mound Westonka. Whoever wants to take home this year’s honor will have to go through Kamara.
Zach Yeager Zach Yeager 6'2" | QB Minneapolis North | 2021 State MN , QB, Minneapolis North
- 70.8% 790 yds, 12 TDs, 1 INT
- 9 car, 57 yds, 1 TD
While Trey Feeney Trey Feeney 6'2" | QB Moorhead | 2021 State MN has begun 2020 on fire, Zach Yeager Zach Yeager 6'2" | QB Minneapolis North | 2021 State MN is not too far behind. Feeney and Yeager together have been on another level when it comes to the top QBs in the state. Minneapolis North’s signal-caller was also a preseason favorite after finishing last year top 15 statewide in passing yards and touchdowns. This year the NC A&T commit has been just as successful with 847 total yards and 13 total touchdowns while completing an efficient 70.8% of his passes. Although Yeager will be competing with his own teammate for the spotlight, he deserves a firm place in the race for this award.
Austin Freerksen, RB/LB, Bryon
- 73 car, 769 yds, 11 TDs
- 1 rec, 17 yds
Austin Freerksen came into this season as a bit of an unknown, as he did not find himself on either Oliver’s or my preseason lists. As Byron competes at the 4A level in the Rochester area, Freerksen does not get the same recognition as the metro players, but he certainly deserves it. The senior running back is leading all of Minnesota in rushing yards through three weeks. His 769 yards on the ground comes on a superb 10.5 yards per carry. Freerksen has done his best job of asserting him into this year’s Mr. Football race.
Gavin Wysong Gavin Wysong 5'9" | LB Hills-Beaver Creek | 2021 State MN , QB/LB, Hills-Beaver Creek
- 66.7% 291 yds, 4 TDs
- 41 car, 470 yds, 7 TDs
- 19 TTcks, 1 TFL, 1 FF
Gavin Wysong Gavin Wysong 5'9" | LB Hills-Beaver Creek | 2021 State MN is another player who doesn’t get a whole lot of recognition, competing at the 9-man level with Hills-Beaver Creek, but he found his place on both mine and Oliver’s preseason list. After a junior year that saw Wysong record nearly 2,000 yards from scrimmage and 32 total touchdowns, he came into 2020 with a lot of expectations. He has lived up to the hype so far leading H-BC to a 3-0 record with 700+ total yards and 11 touchdowns. Wysong has every right to be in the middle of this conversation.
