One of my segments in Minnesota is what I call my “Big Dogs of the Game,” in which I dive into the games and the game film into who played at their best in Volga on Thursday night offensively and defensive. Here are the names I locked in as my big dogs of the game! Enjoy.
Avry Mangan Avry Mangan 6'3" | 215 lbs | DL Sioux Valley | 2021 State , DL/OL, Sioux Valley (2021)
Mangan was in a lot of plays on Thursday night. Two-way player. I think he would be a solid next level linebacker. He was great at stuffing the lanes tonight inside. A player that has had some Division II interest and is certainly worth a continued look.
Noah McDermott, QB, Elk Point-Jefferson (2023)
McDermott showed his youth as just a young sophomore but also showed blemishes of the future. McDermott throws a pretty decent deep ball with an average touch. He needs some development in his pocket presence as you get a vibe that he’s just waiting for the defense only to hit him in the backfield. He’ll develop more poise, I am sure, in the coming years leading these Huskies at QB1.
McKade Rentsch McKade Rentsch 5'11" | 165 lbs | RB Sioux Valley | 2022 State , RB, Sioux Valley (2022)
Rentsch looked like the running back of the future for the Cossacks tonight, with the first two graduating, you’ll learn about later. Rentsch runs like a bulldog that is just looking for six points. His frame is big, and his burst gets better when he sees a hole. Rentsch gets consistent yards on most of his plays. Will get his touches in these playoffs, but look for this kid to be a senior leader next season for the Cossacks.
Lucas Hueser, DB/RB, Elk Point-Jefferson (2023)
Hueser, in my opinion, was the highest note on defense for the Huskies. He plays running back but was best served in the EPJ secondary tonight. The film will show him all at running back, but I think this kid has the skills to be a sleeper in 2023 and a possible next level DB.
Connor Logan Connor Logan 5'11" | 240 lbs | DL Sioux Valley | 2021 State , DE, Sioux Valley (2021)
It seems like Sioux Valley is just loaded on the defensive line, and that includes Connor Logan Connor Logan 5'11" | 240 lbs | DL Sioux Valley | 2021 State . This kid’s motor and burst off the snap is what drew me most on film. He’s an absolute disruptor, and it showed on film and tonight against Elk Point-Jefferson. Mayville State made a move and offered Logan back in June as a linebacker, which with his frame, could be a great fit up in Mayville, North Dakota.
Andrew Nearman, RB/DE, Elk Point-Jefferson (2021)
Nearman was another back that had some pep in his step tonight in Volga. Nearman was most effective in the receiving game for the Huskies, especially on the screen. Although not the fastest, shiftiest guy in the backfield for EPJ, Nearman played very well in his last ever game as a Huskie.
Parker Puetz Parker Puetz 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB Sioux Valley | 2022 State , QB, Sioux Valley (2022)
“He might be one of the top QBs in South Dakota’s 2022 class” are some of the rumblings we heard about Puetz before kickoff. Puetz has a quite nice release of the football and, from a measurables standpoint, should check all the boxes as a 6’3 210-pound junior. Although he is a great deep ball thrower, I think to make him even better, he can work on his deep ball height as it can get a bit high when you watch back the film. A ranked a sleeper in the 2022 class yet.
Tyler Goehring, DB/WR, Elk Point-Jefferson (2021)
Goehring is another Huskie that you will find the opposite film based on the game they played, but I thought Goehring was influential in the secondary. His 6’4 frame plays very well back there as he recorded a few PBUs to his resume in his last as a Huskie.
Raven Olson Raven Olson 6'0" | 195 lbs | ATH Sioux Valley | 2021 State , RB, Sioux Valley (2021)
I am a big fan of how Olson runs when he has the football. Olson showed his consistency in his runs tonight as he ran the ball proficiently. Olson may be a kid that slipped thru the cracks for the Cossacks, as he showed some early interest program back in March but hasn’t had much activity since then. If I were a program, I would take a chance on this kid.
Riley Schmitz Riley Schmitz 6'0" | 165 lbs | RB Elk Point-Jefferson | 2021 State , RB, Elk Point-Jefferson (2021)
Schmitz is another guy I see that deserves a college football opportunity. Schmitz is such a tough runner. He’s a guy that has a burst that can bounce outside and make a big play. Schmitz also has excellent footwork to back up his game. I find it hard to believe this kid can’t get an NAIA or Division III opportunity as he had some light Division II interest earlier in the year.
Jaxton Schiller Jaxton Schiller 6'2" | 195 lbs | ATH Sioux Valley | 2021 State , RB, Sioux Valley (2021)
Game MVP. Schiller showed how much of a slippery prospect he really is tonight in Volga. His multi-touchdown game put this game out of reach for the Huskies. Schiller is a next level wide receiver as his frame and athleticism check my boxes at the college level. Speaking of the college level, Schiller has light college interest as I expect both of these programs I watched tonight to be struck by Division III and NAIA programs even harder once the regular season is over.
