St. Thomas Aquinas took down South River in overtime while North Plainfield edged out Middlesex in their opener. Here are some key players to watch on both sides when these two teams take the field on Friday night.
Joel Marellis (2023) | St. Thomas Aquinas
Marellis looks like the next big thing for the Trojans. He was dominant on both sides of the ball in the opener. He led St. Thomas Aquinas with nine tackles and carried the ball 27 times for 157 yards and a touchdown. He is one of two dynamic sophomores on the offensive end for the Trojans.
Keiahn Grenald (2022) | North Plainfield
Grenald was part of a two-headed monster in the backfield, along with Nasir McGlone, for North Plainfield. Grenald led the way with 10 carries for 107 yards. He was a big play running back from the opening kickoff. He will look to continue to use his speed to dominate in the trenches.
Jayden Young (2023) | St. Thomas Aquinas
Young took over the quarterback duties for St. Thomas Aquinas and performed well in his first start. He finished with 183 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Young added 101 yards and a touchdown on the ground.
Adam Elsais (2021) | North Plainfield
Elsais led a defense that had four players finish with double-digit tackles in Week 1. He logged 17 total and was all over the field. Elsais has great lateral speed and seems to be around the ball at all times. Elsais has a chance to put up insane numbers on the defensive side of the ball as a senior.
Jalen Jones (2021) | St. Thomas Aquinas
Jones is a standout on the basketball court and the football field. The 6’3 senior looked like the Trojans’ No.1 receiver and he performed like it in Week 1. He logged four catches for 74 yards and a score in the overtime victory. He has great athleticism and can jump through the roof. Jones is going to be a force all season long.
Ahmaad Murkey (2021) | North Plainfield
The big play offense of North Plainfield started with Murkey, who finished with 75 receiving yards in the Week 1 victory. The senior has reliable hands and good speed on the outside. Murkey is a strong route runner which helps him get open down the field.
