This was a very physical game, with both teams laying some serious hits. It was surprising to see two explosive offenses end in a low scoring game, but both defenses showed up big on Friday. Here are the top 5 defensive players from the Arizona game of the week:
Defensive MVP: Russell Davis, DE, Hamilton HS (C/O 2022)
Davis was a monster on Friday night, and if he’s not on your board yet, get him on it ASAP. He racked up 3 sacks and was consistently a major problem for Saguaro. He showed exceptional speed on the edge with quick hands to constantly create havoc the Saguaro backfield. He has a long, athletic build at 6’3″ 201lbs., and showed good short area quickness on Friday night. He gets off the ball quick and showed deceptive strength as he was able to bring down Xander Werner Xander Werner 6'2" | 225 lbs | QB Saguaro | 2021 State AZ for a clutch sack. Davis is a legit D1 talent with loads of potential, and he will only continue to get better and mature into a big prospect DE.
Tristan Monday Tristan Monday 6'4" | 240 lbs | LB Saguaro | 2022 State AZ , LB, Saguaro HS (C/O 2022)
Monday showed why he is a power 5 recruit on Friday. He involved himself on numerous tackles and made it tough on the Hamilton O-line all night. He had a very notable TFL on a read option in the redzone. He did a good job of shedding blocks, and was able to rush Marchiol often. Although Hamilton was forced to key on Saguaro standout Quintin Somerville Quintin Somerville 6'3" | 240 lbs | DL Saguaro | 2021 State AZ , Monday made his presence known and proved that he is another major threat to key on. Monday holds multiple power 5 offers, and will continue to rack up many more throughout the rest of his high school career.
Jack Howell, FS, Hamilton HS (C/O 2021)
Howell was a flying around the field last night with around 6 tackles, while making a TD saving tackle on a Saguaro double pass. The transfer from Colorado was consistently in the face of Saguaro ball carriers. He has excellent play recognition and natural instincts, with an exceptional football IQ. Howell is a big threat at safety, and is athletic enough to play anywhere on the field. He has very good range as he covers ground well. He displayed to be a good tackler and attacks full speed. Howell is committed to Colorado State, but could definitely see much more interest from other schools going forward.
Zachary Lewis Zachary Lewis 5'11" | 180 lbs | ATH Hamilton | 2021 State AZ , ATH., Hamilton HS (C/O 2021)
Lewis locked up the Saguaro receivers on Friday. He had a very clutch PBU, when he broke up a fade in the 4th quarter which would’ve put Saguaro around the 10 with about a minute left. He actually made an incredible catch on that PBU, but was just out of bounds. The Nevada commit was in the heads of Saguaro all game. He showed good technique with great speed as he was able to run with the Saguaro receivers. Lewis stepped up big for Hamilton to help hold the explosive Saguaro offense to 7 points.
Thomas Dechesaro, DB, Saguaro HS (C/O 2022)
Dechesaro was able to intercept a scrambling Marchiol pass in the 1st quarter in the red zone to prevent a Hamilton score. Dechesaro provided solid pass coverage all night as Hamilton was unable to connect on any deep balls. He is an athletic kid and seemed to read the QB well. He was oftentimes flying up to provide run support as well. Despite the loss, Dechesaro stepped up for Saguaro to limit the lethal air attack from Hamilton.
