On one hand, he wanted desperately to play his senior season with his Sandia teammates. But on the other, when he committed to Baylor this past spring, he promised the Bears coaches he would enroll early in school and participate in spring practice.
So, when the New Mexico governor and the NMAA moved the high school football season to the spring, Carrell faced a difficult decision: finish out his exceptional high school career and renege on his promise to the Baylor coaches or keep true to his word.
He chose the latter.
Carrell will opt out of his senior season at Sandia and enroll at Baylor in January, he confirmed to Prep Redzone New Mexico.
“It is very difficult to leave my teammates and coaches at Sandia, but I also made a commitment to Baylor last May to be an early enrollee,” Carrell said. “I took classes this summer in order to graduate in December, so my plan since May was to play fall football and enroll at Baylor in January.”
Obviously, the decision to move the 2020 high school football season to the spring threw a wrench into Carrell’s plans to both play his final season at Sandia and then begin his college career in January.
“The way I see it, the governor’s decision to cancel fall sports put me in a position where I was going to either disappoint my high school team or my college team,” the 6-foot-4, 256-pound Carrell said. “I decided to stick with my original plan because of the uncertainty this year has brought. I love my coaches and teammates at Sandia and I’ll be doing everything I can to help them before I graduate.”
Carrell’s absence will undoubtedly leave a large void on the Sandia defense that the Matadors hope to fill in the spring.
