Week one provided a matchup of schools in the Lubbock area that has historically had good success. The Frenship Tigers, who had dominated the football scene around Lubbock for about a decade before moving up to 6A, traveled to Lowrey Field at Plains Capital Park to take on the 5A Lubbock Coronado Mustangs. Coronado boasts a pair of D1 commits in senior quarterback Sawyer Robertson Sawyer Robertson 6'4" | 205 lbs | QB Coronado | 2021 TX (Mississippi State) and senior outside linebacker Isaiah Kelley (SMU). Coronado cruised to a 42-14 victory.
Players That Popped
#12 Sawyer Robertson Sawyer Robertson 6'4" | 205 lbs | QB Coronado | 2021 TX – Coronado Senior Quarterback
This football and baseball commit to Mississippi State showed off how comfortable he is in the Air Raid scheme, throwing for 405 yards and 4 touchdowns, adding in a rushing touchdown as well. The 6 foot 3.5 inches, 190 pound Robertson displayed his quick release on throws and uncorked a couple of pretty deep balls. While he isn’t a true dual-threat QB, he is light on his feet and is able to pick up yards on the ground. He capped off one drive with a 21-yard touchdown run, weaving through the defense for the score.
#10 Isaiah Kelley – Coronado Senior Outside Linebacker
Kelley is an SMU commit that can deliver powerful hits at the point of attack on blockers and on the ball carrier. He has tremendous speed off the edge as a rusher but was asked to be in coverage more often than not in this game. Kelley showcased his range in coverage by running step for step with a slot receiver on a wheel route down the sideline. His 9 tackles were good for 3rd on the team.
#27 Eli Martinez – Coronado Senior Slot Receiver
Martinez had a huge game for the Mustangs, amassing 15 catches for 205 yards and 2 touchdowns. His quick change of direction, vision, and good speed post catch allows him to rack up the YAC yards.
#24 Antonio Malone – Coronado Junior Running Back
Malone’s small stature allows him to maintain leverage with his low to the ground rushing style. He is a slippery runner with solid leg power to drive piles. He ended the day with 9 carries for 45 yards and a touchdown and tacked on an additional 4 receptions for 51 yards.
#7 Charles Robinson – Coronado Senior Middle Linebacker
At 6’1 218 pounds, Robinson is a well built inside linebacker with quick processing abilities that allow him to meet running backs in the hole or behind the line of scrimmage. He piled up 10 tackles in the game and recovered an onside kick on the kickoff team.
#14 William Bayouth – Frenship Senior Running Back
Bayouth is a hard runner that fights through contact and keeps his legs churning to try to drive piles. The rushing lanes were fairly well defended by Coronado, and the score got out of hand quickly, but Bayouth amassed 92 rushing yards in the game
and scored a touchdown.
#15 Tristin Laughlin – Frenship Senior Middle Linebacker
Last season’s leading tackler for the Tigers left no doubt who will lead the team in tackles again this season in this week 1 contest. His quick processing had him around the ball and getting involved in the tackles all night. Laughlin also had a forced fumble and a sack on the night.
#45 Alexander Briggs – Frenship Senior Middle Linebacker
Briggs’ highlight play came when he was lined up as the nose tackle in a pass-rushing package. His explosion off the line and good hand usage helped him to shed the block of the center, while he pushed the pocket and found his way to the quarterback.
