From rushing leaders to those who made an impact through the air and on defense, some players made a tremendous early impact for their teams. Let’s take a look at the stat leaders through the first week.
Rushing:
Marques Hicks, Cadmen Catholic: Hicks exploded for 275 rushing yards on 35 attempts and a touchdown in Camden Catholic’s 27-6 win over Haddon Township on Friday, Oct. 2. His efforts were top in the state in Week 1. He ran with tremendous force and his offensive line gave him some nice holes all night.
Charlie Barth Charlie Barth 5'11" | RB New Providence | 2022 State NJ , New Providence: Barth opened the season in convincing fashion for New Providence in its 40-22 victory over Roselle Park on Friday, Oct. 2. He ran for 245 yards on 15 carries with four touchdowns. He had a pair of 76-yard TD runs in the win.
Kevin Christ, Mountain Lakes: The senior running back went for 234 yards in Mountain Lakes’ season-opening 35-14 win at Parsippany on Friday, Oct. 2.
Devon Turner, Dumont: Turner ran for 230 yards on 20 attempts with three touchdowns in Dumont’s 41-14 win at Pascack Hills. He scored on runs of 2, 4 and 46 yards.
Sha’Kim Shuler, Freehold Borough: Shuler carried 32 times for 215 yards and two scores as Freehold Borough edged Manalapan, 14-12, on Saturday, Oct. 3. He scored on a pair of 4-yard runs in the second and third quarters.

Gabe Abel, Ewing: 10 carries-214 yards-2 TDs
Montez Boswell, Orange: 15 carries-205 yards-4 TDs
Sean McDade, Pennsville: 21 carries-198 yards-2 TDs
Zach Palmer-Smith, Delran: 23 carries-190 yards-3 TDs
Passing:
Ben Maiers, Kingway: The senior quarterback went 17-of-20 for 299 yards and three touchdowns in Kingsway’s 35-0 shutout of Highland this past Friday.
Cael Zebrowski Cael Zebrowski 6'1" | QB Verona | 2022 NJ , Verona: Zebrowski finished 14-of-18 for 280 yards and four touchdowns as Verona got past Caldwell, 41-21, on Friday, Oct. 2.
Steven Faussette, Hasbrouck Heights: Faussette went 13-for-17 for 276 yards and threw three touchdowns in Hasbrouck Heights’ 28-14 victory over Cresskill. He also ran for 126 yards on 11 carries with a score.
Marco Lainez Marco Lainez 6'3" | 225 lbs | QB The Hun School | 2023 State NJ , Hun: Lainez went 13-for-15 for 271 yards with four touchdowns as Hun rolled past Kiski School (Pa.), 68-0, on Saturday, Oct. 3.
Receiving:
Corey Palmer, Camden: Palmer made six receptions for 192 yards and a touchdown but Camden was upset by Winslow, 15-12, on Saturday, Oct. 3. Palmer made a 47-yard TD catch in the loss.
Quentin Soler, Middletown North: Soler made 10 catches for 160 yards and a score in Middletown North’s 41-9 loss to state-ranked Rumson-Fair Haven on Oct. 2.
Zach Thomas, Morris Catholic: Thomas made nine catches for 136 yards in Morris Catholic’s 21-8 loss to Pequannock on Friday, Oct. 2.
Nate Maiers, Kingsway: Maiers made four receptions for 131 yards and two scores in Kingsway’s 35-0 shutout of Highland on Oct. 2.
Tucker Gabrich, Warren Hills: Gabrich caught four balls for 127 yards and four scores in Warren Hills’ 41-13 loss to Mount Olive on Oct. 2.
