Top 6 Young Quarterbacks in Western PA
Here are the top 6 quarterbacks to watch at the mid-season point. This list contains 3 juniors, 2 sophomores, and 1 freshman. The list is in order from juniors to freshmen. It is based on film and statistics.
West Allegheny HS – Gavin Miller Gavin Miller 6'0" | 180 lbs | QB West Allegheny | 2022 State PA (JR) Quarterback 6’0 180:
JR Mid-Season Analysis: Gavin is undersized. He has a high, tight, quick release with some zip to the ball. He has an okay arm, with accuracy. Can make throws in tight spots. Athletic enough to escape the pocket. He shows to be a passer first, runner second. So far this season he has completed 60% of his passes minimum of 140 attempts. He has thrown for 1,223 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 4 INT’s. With his size and arm strength hard to imagine he would be a Power 5 QB but could be a low-level FBS player. According to his twitter, he is an Auburn baseball commit.
North Catholic HS – Joey Prentice (JR) Quarterback 6’1 200
JR Mid-Season Analysis: Joey is a little undersized. He has a high, tight, quick release with zip. Looks to have a good arm. He is athletic. Looks accurate. So far this season he has completed 67% of his passes minimum of 50 attempts. He has thrown for 815 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 2 INT’s He has also carried the ball 36 times for 293 yards and 7 touchdowns. Right now, think he would be an FCS quarterback. Still has a lot to prove with only 4 games under his belt.
Mt. Lebanon HS – Joey Daniels (JR) Quarterback 5’10 175
JR Mid-Season Analysis: Joey is undersized. He shows a high, tight, quick release with some zip. Still have questions about his arm strength, don’t see him really sling it. His accuracy is okay, does show to make receivers adjust to ball when wide open. Athletic enough but he really isn’t going to beat you with his legs. So far this season he has completed 70% of his passes a minimum of 50 attempts. He has thrown for 803 yards, 10 touchdowns, and 0 INT’s. His film may not be that impressive but when the team needs him, he delivers. Right now, think he is a D2 quarterback but that could change within the next year.
South Park – Harper Conroy (SOPH) Quarterback 6’5 185
SOPH Mid-Season Analysis: Harper has great size. He shows a high, tight, quick release. He is sneaky athletic. Looks accurate in the pocket and on the run. Seems to have a good arm but don’t really see him sling it. So far this season he has completed 56% of his passes a minimum of 50 attempts. He has thrown for 444 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 2 INT’s. His stats aren’t off the charts like others on the list but based on his size and film, Harper shows the most potential of being a Power 5 QB. Very interested in how he continues to grow and develop.
Armstrong – Cadin Olsen (SOPH) Quarterback 6’4 205
SOPH Mid-Season Analysis: Cadin has good size for a sophomore. He has a high, tight, quick release. Has a pretty good arm, average accuracy. Needs to improve footwork and accuracy on the run. Not very athletic, he is a pure pocket passer. He does show toughness inside and outside the pocket. So far this season he has completed 51% of his passes minimum of 150 attempts. He has thrown for 1,357 yards, 12 touchdowns, and 1 INT. Cadin shows potential of being an FBS quarterback but needs to be coached up more.
Jeannette – Brad Birch (FROSH) Quarterback 6’1 180
FROSH Mid-Season Analysis: Brad looks like he has good size for a freshman. He has a high, tight release but the ball doesn’t fly out of hand. He has a decent arm, obviously will get better has he grows and develops. Shows some athletic ability. So far this season he has completed 64% of his passes a minimum of 100 attempts. He has thrown for 924 yards and 15 touchdowns, and 4 INT’s. He is someone to keep an eye on for the next few years and could be one of the best QB’s in the 2024 class from the WPIAL.
