When the Titans stopped the Indians’ two-point conversion attempt with no time remaining, years of frustration came to an end – along with an impressive 65-game winning streak that head coach Lenny Jankowski and his teams have put together since 2013.
On a Friday night, when several other key match-ups were taking place across the state of Florida, this quality game may have lost the spotlight it truly deserved as two of the best 8A teams in the state battled for a full 48 minutes.
From the beginning of the game, there was no getting around the fact that thus would be a four-quarter game – like it has been the past few years – when the Indians prevailed.
Senior quarterback Jonius Watkins was once again the show – as he gave everyone a glimpse of what he can do – and despite sitting out several plays with an injury – he made enough appearances to spark this program. He gave the Titans (5-0) a seven-point lead with his 1-yard touchdown leap with 1:34 remaining in the final quarter.
But as expected, Vero Beach (3-1) did not quit – and despite no timeouts remaining, the Indians drove the ball to the Treasure Coast 44-yard line with enough time to run one final play. Quarterback Jackson Nairn completed a pass to wide receiver Tyler Wrenn, who pitched the ball to running back Bobby McMillian.
The score with no time on the clock left Jankowski and his team with a decision – and it was made quickly. Vero Beach opted to go for a two-point conversion, but Treasure Coast was able to pressure Nairn and his pass fell short.
This was a game that showcased stars on both sides of the ball – and besides Watkins, the Titans got some major contributions from Rico Porcha, Jayden Azeredo, Eden James, Keegan Davis Keegan Davis 6'3" | 230 lbs | LB Port St. Lucie Treasure Coast | 2021 FL , Mar’Quez Bargman, Travis Hodge, Donald Thomas and Cedric Wilcox to name a few.
