Every Monday, we break down the top ten games across the state of Oklahoma. It’s week seven and that brings us Fall Break for schools across Oklahoma. That means that the majority of this week’s games will be on Thursday. Unless otherwise noted, all of these games will kick off on Thursday night.
1) CARL ALBERT (4-1) AT PIEDMONT (3-1) (SATURDAY)
For the third consecutive week, all eyes will be on the Carl Albert Titans. They are once again part of our game of the week for the third straight week. They bounced back after the blowout loss to Bixby in week five by dominating Bishop McGuinness in the second half last week. Now they shift their focus to a special Saturday afternoon game with Piedmont, the team that snapped their 40-game winning streak last season. For Piedmont, they’re hungry to get back on the field after having several games get cancelled. Not to mention they want revenge after losing to Carl Albert in the semifinals a year ago.
2) EDMOND SANTA FE (4-2) AT JENKS (4-1)
It’s time to see if lightning can strike twice as the Santa Fe Wolves travel to Jenks. Last year, Santa Fe stunned the Trojans at Allan Trimble Stadium and that propelled them to the district championship. This year, the Wolves come to Jenks expecting to win again. They’ve won four in a row after a tough 0-2 start. Jenks has bounced back after a non-district loss to Bixby. For the Trojans, a win here will all but lock up the district title after they beat Broken Arrow a few weeks ago. Santa Fe expects to win and Jenks expects to get some revenge for last year’s loss.
3) COWETA (5-1) AT McALESTER (5-1)
While most of Class 5A’s focus will be in Piedmont on Saturday afternoon, a Thursday night clash in McAlester has the Buffaloes hosting Coweta in a huge district match-up. The Buffaloes and Tigers are both 5-1 and in the same district with an undefeated Bishop Kelley. McAlester needs to win Thursday to stay alive in the district title hunt while a loss will all but eliminate them from contention. Coweta still has Kelley on their schedule so a win here will put them right there with the Comets atop the district standings. Both teams have QB’s who have been playing very well in the last few weeks.
4) BERRYHILL (2-1) AT HOLLAND HALL (5-0)
Berryhill came into this season with state championship aspirations. However, it’s now week seven and they’ve only played two games against varsity competition. They do have a win over Broken Arrow’s JV squad back in September. Now they go on the road to face a Holland Hall team that has emerged as the top team in Class 3A. The Dutch are in the top ten games for a second straight week. However, last week’s game with Vinita was cancelled. They’re hoping that they can get back on the field and show why they’re now the top team in 3A football.
5) BROKEN ARROW (3-2) AT YUKON (4-2)
While Edmond Santa Fe and Jenks might be the marquee game in this district, Broken Arrow travels to Yukon in a very important district clash. For Yukon, they’ll be looking to bounce back after a loss to Santa Fe last week. Another district loss would put the Millers in danger of missing the playoffs. For Broken Arrow, they still have hopes of a home playoff game and an outside shot at the district title. They can’t afford another loss or reaching those goals will be tough. As for the game itself, don’t expect a long game as both teams want to run the football.
6) PUTNAM CITY NORTH (5-0) AT DEL CITY (0-4)
It’s absolutely a make or break week for Del City. It’s not often that we get to this point of the season and we have a winless team in the top ten games. But 2020 has been weird. Del City is 0-4 and have obviously had some games cancelled. However, after losing to rival Midwest City last week, and an earlier loss to Stillwater, the Eagles find their backs against the wall of missing out on the playoffs. They welcome in a PC North team that is undefeated, but haven’t played a team with the overall talent like Del City. This makes for an interesting 6A-D2 match-up where we’ll learn a lot about both teams.
7) KINGSTON (6-0) AT SULPHUR (4-2)
Several teams have had no problem with moving up to a higher class. In Class 3A, we have a couple teams. Holland Hall has emerged as the top ranked team in 3A. Kingston has also moved up to 3A this year and currently hold an undefeated record and continue to climb our 3A rankings every single week. They’ll get their toughest test this week when they square off with a perennial power in Sulphur. After starting 0-2, Sulphur has won four straight and has given up a total of 13 points during that stretch. The district lead is on the line in this 3A clash on Thursday.
8) EL RENO (3-2) AT DUNCAN (2-2)
A week after Duncan knocked off Ardmore, they’ll now take a swing at another ranked opponent in El Reno. Duncan could take command of the district lead with a win on Thursday over the Indians. That certainly would be a surprise when you looked at this district back in August. On the other side, El Reno has been playing good football now that they’re getting back to full strength. They got beat up in non-district play and took a few losses but this was never a team that needed to hit the panic button. Once they got healthy, you knew they would once again be a 5A threat.
9) CLEVELAND (4-1) AT BRISTOW (3-3)
This match-up between 4A teams right on the border of being ranked is certainly one of interest. Bristow and Cleveland are in the same district as top-ranked Wagoner. Both have been handed losses by the Bulldogs. So now, Bristow and Cleveland are just battling for playoff positioning and a home playoff game is still on the table for the winner here. As mentioned, both teams are right there on the border of being ranked teams, especially a Cleveland team that has looked really good on the offensive side of the ball. Don’t be surprised by a high-scoring affair on Thursday.
10) STILLWATER (4-0) AT LAWTON (3-1) (FRIDAY)
Another 6A-D2 match-up of note will take place on Friday night and it’s arguably the best match-up on Friday. Lawton will host Stillwater and try to slow down the Pioneer high-powered offense. Nobody has been able to slow it down so far. Lawton has had a few weeks off since their district opener. Stillwater didn’t play last week and is looking to continue their stranglehold on the district. If the Wolverines show any kind of rust after several weeks off, the Pioneers will take advantage. Stillwater is looking to pick up some momentum as we get closer to November.
