The Demons put the finishing touches on their seventh win with a 62-8 victory over Keokuk earlier this month. Now, they will face the very same team in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs this week.
For Willis, the moment was one he’ll never forget.
“My favorite memory of the season so far was winning against Keokuk,” Willis said, “and going undefeated for the first time in 52 years.”
As has been the case all season long, Willis played a key role in the victory. The senior completed 7 of 12 passes for 261 yards and three touchdowns.
Washington has been in rhythm over the final three games, scoring 68, 69 and 62 points. The closest game the Demons have had this year came in Week 1 when they bested Bettendorf, 19-10.
Willis is completing almost 55 percent of his passes for 743 yards with 11 touchdowns and just two interceptions, giving him a 129 quarterback rating. He’s also rushed for 458 yards and 11 touchdowns, averaging almost eight yards per carry.
On the other side of the ball, Willis has 25 tackles including 10 solo stops, two tackles for loss and a sack. He also returned an interception for a TD.
“Finishing off the regular season was great,” Willis said. “The team played phenomenally and we finished undefeated and won our district. This season has been something special for sure.
“We’ve all been trying to maintain focus and not get too complacent. We know that we have to be dedicated if we want to make a run deep in the playoffs.”
