Watchung Hills rallied in the second half, relied on its defense and picked up a huge 16-13 win. Let’s take a look at the winners from the Somerset County showdown.
Chad Martini, Watchung Hills: The Watchung Hills quarterback and Cornell commit led the way with a pair of late drives that resulted in points. He put the finishing touches on the game with a 1-yard keeper that gave the Warriors a 16-7 advantage. He overcame some sacks in the first half and an early interception.
Spencer Ostroff, Watchung Hills: Ostroff gave the Warriors a 3-0 lead on a 31-yard field goal 1:47 into the game. The three points came after Watchung Hills’ Shane Kelly recovered an onside kick to start the game.
Kyle Saunders, Watchung Hills: Saunders gave Watchung Hills a 10-7 lead in the fourth quarter on a 7-yard TD run.
Thomas Amankwaa, Hillsborough: Amankwaa put Hillsborough on top with a 7-3 lead with 3:29 left in the first quarter after he hauled in a 30-yard TD pass from quarterback Jay Mazuera. Amankwaa caught another TD pass from Mazuera, this time 42 yards, to close out the game in the fourth quarter.
Tyler Michinard, Hillsborough: Michinard, a junior, had two of Hillsborough’s three sacks on Martini in the first half.
