A lot of this has been seen in the West Jersey Football League, a nearly 100 high school super-conference in Central and South Jersey.
Prep Redzone continues this multi-part series, taking a closer look at some junior wide receivers in the WJFL to look out for the rest of this season and into next season.
Kenny Boswell, Overbrook: Boswell has the look of a larger, more physical wide receiver who’s strength is one of his best attributes on the field. Considering he plays defensive end/outside linebacker on defense, this makes complete sense and you can see it on film. He has great speed off the jump, sneaky fast agility that allows him to get in the flat easily as a big passing target. As a bruiser wide receiver, he’s not afraid of contact and excels after the catch and after contact. Boswell will continue to build off this season’s success in the offseason.
Dante Del Luca, Hadddonfield: Del Luca is a very athletic receiver and will sacrifice his body for the catch and a big yardage gain. He has the potential for burning speed down the sideline, but he tends to be a slant route-runner or someone in the flat, but he’s a reliable target to throw to. Very rarely is he dropping passes or making big mistakes on offense. Del Luca is someone the Bulldogs need in crucial situations.
Byron Gary, Willingboro: Gary, while being a trusted receiver for Willingboro, is a fantastic open-field blocker and an important blocker off the snap and off the line. When the ball isn’t thrown to him he’s out there creating space for his teammates to run freely down the field, and he doesn’t shy away from a defender trying to get around him. Gary welcomes the contact to get more yards for Willingboro. For a team that had a decent 3-2 season this year, his attributes will be needed more in the offseason in preparation for 2021.
Kristian Valeriano, Sterling: Valeriano has the height, speed and strength you want out of a wide receiver. Currently 6-4, he has the size you’re looking for in an agile receiver, and he has the stats and ability to back it up and prove his worth. He’s trusted going up for a pass 1-on-1, a 50-50 ball, to come down with it for the catch. He’s in the right place at the right time, most of the time because of his height, a very easy target to get over the heads of defensive backs and the secondary. He’s very quick and will burn his defender and he just has the look of someone who is going to dominate in college. Keep an eye on him.
Connor Daly, Delran: There really is a lot to take away and to like about this back/receiver combo. He is both featured in the backfield and in the slot, arguably his best place to be. His speed is impressive to watch. He’ll leave defenders in his wake, and easily glide past them, but at 5-9, his ability to go up and get passes is a massive asset for Delran and anyone recruiting Daly. Some of those balls, only he can get to and those are some difficult passes. Expect him to continue to work on his hands and become a sure-fire receiving target in 2021 for Delran.
