Not only are the Crusaders undefeated, but they beat the top ranked team in the district, Archbishop Rummel, a couple weeks ago 26-23. The Crusaders will not be an underdog opponent in any of their last two games left. If these five players continue to play how they have for the first six weeks, Brother Martin could enter the playoffs with a perfect record and a top seed.
Logan Farrell, 6’4”, 215, TE, Senior
Logan Farrell has ideal height for a tight end and possesses the type of body that could gain thirty or so pounds at the next level. While not the thickest tight end, the strength to his game is his run blocking. He thrives when pulling around and either lead blocking a linebacker at the second level or kicking out an edge defender. This year, he has been a bigger target in the passing game as well. Although he’s not the fastest player, he has good hands and seems to be able to find holes in the secondary frequently. With his size, I think some coaches would love to take a chance on him at the next level.
Jaylon Spears, 5’10”, 200, RB, Senior
Jaylon Spears has had a terrific year for the Crusaders so far, and I don’t see him slowing down anytime soon. Through week 5, Spears is averaging about 6.5 yards per carry and has 11 rushing touchdowns in just four games. He is a dynamic back who has great athletic ability and can punish defenders whom get in his way. What I like most about his game is his knack for making defenders miss in the second level. He is a good receiver out of the backfield, but would benefit from working on his route running and hands to be a very effective every down back in college.
Garrett Mmahat, 6’2”, 175, QB, Junior
Garrett Mmahat has stepped up his play from his sophomore season. He is one of the most efficient passers in the New Orleans area with throwing for over 1,000 yards already and only 2 interceptions to go with his 10 passing touchdowns. He only has a 55% completion through five weeks, but much of his misses are deep throws downfield. Although he is not a completely polished quarterback prospect yet, I think with another year of growth and gained arm strength, he can be one of the top quarterbacks in Louisiana his senior season.
Arturo Garcia, 6’1”, 265, OC/OG, Senior
Arturo Garcia is the center for the Brother Martin offense but also has the capability to move to guard. He is a vocal leader on the Crusader offensive line which is an important trait for centers to have. Although he is not as big as some offensive linemen, he is very quick after the snap to engaging his defender. Garcia is a tough blocker and moves very well. If he is able to continue to gain strength and put on some strong pounds, he could be a good prospect for some lower levels programs, particularly because of his vocal leadership.
Corey Lambert Jr, 6’0”, 180, FS, Junior
Corey Lambert is a dynamic playmaker for the Crusader defense. In his junior season, he already has three interceptions in six games and has made plenty of other big plays. As a free safety, Lambert excels at reading the quarterbacks eyes and flowing to the direction of the pass. He is not the biggest hitter, but Lambert is not afraid to make some plays defending the run game. I think if he continues to have a strong junior season, coaches will be keeping a close eye on Lambert next year.
