There were some eye-popping performances in Week 6. Some received noteworthy praise, and rightfully so, while others went about business in a quieter fashion. Let’s take a look at five under-the-radar performances from Week 6.
Alex Benitez Alex Benitez 5'8" | QB Montgomery | 2022 NJ , Montgomery: The senior Montgomery quarterback and defensive back had a strong day in the Cougars’ 44-6 victory over Immaculata on Saturday, helping the team win their third straight and get past .500 at 3-2. Benitez did his damage on the ground, rushing for 150 yards on 20 carries with scoring runs of 1, 4, 5 and 9 yards. He capitalized on his opportunities to tuck it in and run, and he followed his blockers up front to get his yardage. He was also effective on defense with five tackles and an interception. Montgomery meets Scotch Plains-Fanwood in Week 7.
Dan Riser, Wood-Ridge: Riser, a senior tight end and defensive lineman, helped Wood-Ridge snap a three-game losing streak following a 7-6 victory over Saddle Brook on Friday. He was effective on both ends, scoring the lone touchdown on the receiving end and finishing with eight tackles, a sack and an interception on defense. Riser put pressure on the Saddle Brook quarterback all night, and he delivered some powerful hits.
Anthony DeMarco, Lyndhurst: DeMarco did it all for Lyndhurst in its 34-6 victory over Snyder on Friday. He made six catches for 114 yards, scoring on a 7-yard pass from Johnny Lembo. DeMarco also found the end zone on a 2-yard run. On defense, he had 10 tackles and had an interception.
Adam Coleman, Matawan: Matawan got it done on the ground this past Friday night, and as a result captured a 28-14 victory over Keyport for the team’s first win of the season. Marvin Lovinsky totaled 101 yards on 22 carries and found the end zone on a 5-yard run. Coleman, however, was the star of the show, finishing with a blistering 213 yards on 21 carries, reaching the end zone three times, including a 40-yard run. Coleman was shifty in his runs, making defenders miss, and the Keyport defense had trouble getting contact on him.
Richard Gonzalez, Bayonne: Gonzalez finished 12-of-15 for 265 yards and tossed five touchdowns in Bayonne’s 40-8 victory over North Bergen on Nov. 6. He threw TD passes of 12, 20, 34, 52 and 54 yards. Jerome Edwards was his down-the-field target. Edwards caught TD throws of 34, 52 and 54 yards. Edwards also forced a fumble and had a sack.
