In many cases, it was the last opportunity for some teams and players to make their mark not only this season but in their high school careers. Let’s take a look at five under- the-radar performances from Week 8.
Ashanti Caviness, Bogota: Caviness led Bogota to its fourth straight win behind a 33-0 shutout of Emerson Boro, leading the group to a division title. Caviness ran for 276 yards and three touchdowns, including a 75-yard score. Caviness, at 6-foot-6, 210 pounds, handed Emerson Boro its first loss, and the Bucs had a nice turnaround campaign. The Bogota senior quarterback, who previously played at wide receiver, was great on option plays and draws, and he did a great job of keeping Emerson Boro off balance on defense. Caviness took advantage of his size and made some big plays on defense as well.
Rocco Bellamy, St. Joseph (Met.): The St. Joseph junior caught a 4-yard pass from Matt Stanton and had an interception in the team’s impressive 21-9 victory over Cranford this past Friday. Omari Jones ran for an 84-yard TD in the win. Bellamy was at the right place at the right time on his interception, and his score off play action gave the Falcons a 14-0 advantage over the Union County squad. He applied pressure on defense and had some nice runs on offense.
Haaziq Barksdale, Lakewood: The Lakewood senior ran 10 times for 200 yards and scored on runs of 10, 30 and 65 yards, and he also had a 50-yard TD pass from Jayvon Gonzalez in Lakewood’s 40-12 victory over Jackson Liberty on Nov. 21. The victory was Lakewood’s second of the season, and it snapped a three-game losing streak.
Tyler Douglas, Ocean Township: Douglas, the sophomore quarterback at Ocean Township, ran for 126 yards on 12 carries with four touchdowns in the team’s 49-26 victory over Manchester Township. Douglas also threw for 129 yards and a TD. He helped Ocean Township get to .500 at 3-3.
Justin Brown, Triton: Brown had the majority of the workload in Triton’s 56-50 victory over Pennsauken this past Saturday. He ran 30 times for 208 yards and scored two TDs. He helped Triton snap a four-game skid. The playmaker did a great job of following his blockers and finding holes in the run game. He ran with speed and physicality all game.
