Championship History: 5-8 (14th Appearance)
While Choctaw is ending a lengthy championship drought, Bixby is right back in the title game for the seventh consecutive season and the 14th time in school history. Before the split in Class 6A, Bixby had made seven title game appearances with all seven ending with Bixby coming home with silver. Their first appearance came in 1964. However, since 6A split to two divisions, there is no doubt that Bixby has not only dominated but they have owned 6A-D2. This is the seventh 6A-D2 state championship game and Bixby has been a participant in all seven. They own a 5-1 record and have won the last two. The only championship loss came in 2017 when they fell to Booker T Washington. However, while it’s no secret that Bixby has dominated, it’s also no secret that with their enrollment continuing to rise, it’s only a matter of time before they get moved up to 6A-D1.
Offensive Production: 52.2 PPG (56 PPG In Playoffs)
For the second straight year, Bixby comes into the championship game with an offense that is averaging north of 50 points per game. The Spartans have been lights out on offense this season, scoring north of 50 points in six games this season. They even put up 70 points or more in two games this year. However, Choctaw fans can take some pride in knowing that they held Bixby to their season-low in scoring by a significant margin. They held Bixby to 24 points back in week six. That was the only time this season that Bixby failed to score at least 30 points. The Spartans have a very balanced offense that has a great mix of run and pass.
Defensive Production: 15.7 PPG (23.5 PPG In Playoffs)
When you look at Bixby this season, it’s hard not to get lost in the offensive explosion they’ve had. Whether it’s the numbers they’ve put up in the passing game or running game, the Spartans have been nearly impossible to slow down. However, the defense has done their job as well and they’ve been tough to score on. It hasn’t been Bixby just winning shootout after shootout. They’ve given up just shy of 16 points per game. However, they have been giving up more points over the last month. In their last three games, Bixby has given up at least 20 points in each game. Granted, it hasn’t mattered with the scoring explosion they’ve had on offense.
Notable
Bixby hasn’t lost a game since the season opener of the 2018 season. They would finish 12-1 that year and come into Saturday’s game with a 35-game winning streak. That streak is good for the tenth best in state history for 11-man football. The state record is Wagoner’s 48 in a row from 2014-2017. A state championship victory would give Bixby 36 going into next year, setting up a 2021 season where they would be hunting for the record for longest winning streak in state history.
CHOCTAW YELLOWJACKETS (9-3)
Sept 4 – Lost To Springdale, AR. 46-18
Sept 11 – Beat Van Buren, AR. 28-10
Sept 18 – Lost To Greenwood, AR. 23-12
Sept 25 – Beat Booker T Washington 26-22
Oct 2 – Beat Ponca City 20-14
Oct 9 – Lost To Bixby 24-13
Oct 15 – Beat Muskogee 26-10
Oct 23 – Beat Sand Springs 34-9
Oct 30 – Beat Putnam City West 55-12
Nov 6 – Beat Bartlesville 61-21
1st Round – Bye Week
Quarterfinal – Beat Putnam City North 20-7
Semifinal – Beat Stillwater 38-35
Championship History: 1-0 (2nd Appearance)
For the first time in 60 years, the Choctaw Yellowjackets are playing for a state championship. 1960 was the first and last appearance in the state championship game. They would win the Class B title that year in a win over Stigler. Since the split in Class 6A, the Yellowjackets have made more consistent trips to the playoffs. Before 2014, when the 6A split happened, you have to go back to 1984 to see their last appearance in the playoffs. This year was the first year that Choctaw made it to the semifinals in back to back years since the early 60’s. The Yellowjackets are knocking on the door of becoming one of the next powers in 6A-D2.
Offensive Production: 29.3 PPG (29 PPG In Playoffs)
Choctaw comes into the title game with a very balanced offense when it comes to passing and running the ball. They are averaging just short of 30 points per game. However, over the last month, the Yellowjackets are playing even better, especially on the offensive side of the ball. In their last four games, that scoring average goes up to 43 points per game. When it comes to offensive side of the ball, they have found the balance with the pass and the run and they’re playing some of their best ball now.
Defensive Production: 19.4 PPG (21 PPG In Playoffs)
On the other side of the ball, you’ll find that same consistency from the Choctaw defense. They’ve been giving up just short of 20 points per game and just a couple points more in their two playoff games. However, they are coming off a game where they gave up 35 to Stillwater. But the 35 points was their second lowest scoring output this season. The Yellowjackets are strong at all three levels of their defense. And when you watch what they can do, one thing is very apparent and it’s their speed.
Notable
While Bixby comes into the title game with a significant winning streak, Choctaw is coming off a semifinal victory where they snapped a Stillwater streak. The Pioneers had won 32 consecutive games against teams not named Bixby. The Pioneers were 32-3 in their last 35 with the only losses coming to Bixby in playoff meetings. That was until the Yellowjackets snapped that streak with a field goal as time expired. They also got some revenge for last year, when they played Stillwater twice and lost by a combined 110 points.
