Of course, it appears the powerful Grayson Rams will be the favorite to win another state title game, but they’ll have to get through a Tift County team led by elite defensive line target Tyre West in the first round. Tift County went 2-6 this year and had arguably the toughest schedule of any team in the peach state. The sneaked into the playoffs, and now they’ll have to play possibly the best team in the state.
The Rams, led by USC QB commit Jake Garcia and Clemson RB commit Phil Mafah Phil Mafah 6'1" | 213 lbs | RB Grayson | 2021 State GA , should get past Tift County with ease. They’ll then have a second-round matchup against the winner of the Harrison/Newnan game. The Harrison Hoyas are 3-6 this year, and they will have to play a great game to beat the 9-1 Newnan Cougars. Newnan has big wins over Sandy Creek and McEachern this year, and their only loss was to 9-1 Coweta County by just one point.
So the Rams will likely play Newnan in the second round, and that’s a game they could lose, but only if they play one of their worst games of the year. Grayson’s offense should be too much for a Newman defense that has given up at least 23 points in 4 of their last 5 games. So the Rams should take care of business in round two.
In round 3, the Rams should have a matchup with either West Forsyth, North Gwinnett, Cherokee, or Meadowcreek. It will most likely come down to West Forsyth and North Gwinnett in the second round, and the Bulldogs of North Gwinnett will have the edge from a talent perspective. Grayson should be the favorite to win either of those games in the 3rd round.
After that, you have to take a look at who else is still in the playoffs.
So which teams could give the Rams some trouble?
The 8-2 Collins Hill Eagles are extremely talented with 2022 QB Sam Horn Sam Horn 6'4" | 190 lbs | QB Collins Hill | 2022 State GA and 2022 ATH Travis Hunter Travis Hunter 6'1" | 165 lbs | ATH Collins Hill | 2022 State GA , but they already lost to Grayson by 21 points earlier this year.
The Norcross Blue Devils are 10-0 and a dark horse to make it past Grayson and make a state title run. They gave East Coweta (9-1) their only loss of the season and beat a strong Mill Creek team as well. They may not be the most talented team, but the Blue Devils are well coached and play extremely well together.
The Milton Eagles could also challenge Grayson for a state title. The Eagles are 9-0 and defeated Cherokee last Friday night for the region championship. The Eagles are one of the most talented teams in the state and have been able to run over just about everyone with 2022 RB Jordan McDonald. Expect them to make a big run in the playoffs.
The biggest threat to Grayson for the state title is most likely Colquitt County. The Packers are 7-0 and have played outstanding football over the last few weeks. They’re clicking on offense, and their defense has given up 20+ points only once this year. They are a complete team and will be tough to beat for anyone, including Grayson, in the 7A playoffs.
