Continue ReadingCartersville High School, in which Trevor Lawrence and plenty of other stellar college athletes hail from, has compiled another impressive season up to this point. Because of this, they are poised to take on the playoffs in a few weeks, and will be looking to compete against any team that comes their way. With an 8-1 record, the Hurricanes have dominated their competition. Along the way, they have managed to become 4-0 within their region. Their only loss on the season comes from their 14-12 final score against Cherokee, back in October. As a whole, the team has performed well on both sides of the ball, as they have scored over 320 points so far this season, while only allowing 92. This upcoming Friday, the Hurricanes face one of their biggest challenges of the season, as they will be playing against 7-3 Calhoun High.
Despite the fact that the Hurricanes have been seemingly underrated this season due to the attention that some programs are receiving throughout the state, they have still managed to perform up to expectations. Offensively, with QB, Stratton Tripp at the helm, the team has put up over 1,600 passing yards, with almost 1,300 of those belonging to Tripp. With this, Tripp has passed for 11 TD’s, which has largely gone to Sam Phillips Sam Phillips 5'7" | 155 lbs | WR Cartersville | 2021 GA , and Devonte Ross Devonte Ross 5'11" | WR Cartersville | 2021 State GA , who have each caught 4 TD’s. Ross, who has totaled over 500 receiving yards, along with Phillips, who has recorded over 400, lead the team in receiving. Other players such as Evan Slocum Evan Slocum 5'10" | 175 lbs | DB Cartersville | 2021 State GA , and Kolbe Benham have also made a name for themselves catching the football for the Hurricanes this season. As far as the running game goes, the team has also found a large amount of success, as Quante’ Jennings has rushed for 500 yards, adding to the overall total of over 1,100 yards to this point of the season. Jennings has also been largely successful for the team’s success, as he has scored 10 times on the ground this season.
Defensively, Cartersville has been outstanding as well, as they have only allowed 92 points to this point of the season. This is largely due to the overall success throughout the defense, as multiple players have contributed with tackles, turnovers, and sacks. Gavin Geros, who leads the teams in tackles, has been able to contribute with key stops as well. With this, in total, the Hurricanes have also recorded 10 sacks this season, with Manny Hayes, and Tate Smith leading the charge with 3 sacks each. Another defensive force for Cartersville has been Sam Phillips Sam Phillips 5'7" | 155 lbs | WR Cartersville | 2021 GA , who has managed to accumulate 3 interceptions this season. Due to the Hurricanes large amount of consistency on defense, we believe they can match up with some of the best teams in the state. One of the biggest question marks would be if they could keep up with a high powered offense if that were to occur. Soon enough, we will be able to see.
