It will be a great ride to the finish in class 4A with multiple teams looking to be true contenders to win the final game of the season.
Marist:
The War Eagles of Marist are state title contenders each season, and they are one of the best programs in the Atlanta area of all time. They have another excellent team in 2020, and their defense has been almost perfect. The 7-0 War Eagles have shutout four opponents in only 6 played games. They’ve only given up two field goals all season, not letting any opponent in the end-zone so far. Offensively, Marist is consistent, scoring more than 23 points in each game so far. They’ll take on 3-3 Miller Grove this weekend and end the season against 3-6 Mays. Look for Marist to be one of the favorites to win it all in 4A.
Jefferson:
Another undefeated team at 8-0, the Dragons are a true contender thanks to do-it-all athlete Malaki Starks Malaki Starks 6'1" | 195 lbs | ATH Jefferson | 2022 State GA . The 6-foot-2 190-pounder can make plays at quarterback with the football, as he’s a great runner and rusher from the position. He’s a standout defender at safety, and that’s where he’ll likely play on the next level. He could also play receiver on offense and could play some linebacker at some point down the road as he continues to grow and put on good way. He’s the leader on a team that improves week by week, and they’re starting to hit their peak offensively. They’re a fun team to watch and would be a great matchup for Marist or any other team in the end.
Hardaway:
The Hawks haven’t had the toughest schedule, but they’re dominating just about everyone with their lone loss coming against an excellent Callaway team. They had an close, impressive win over Troup County early in the season, but other than those two games, Hardaway has won the rest of their games with ease. Their defense is led by junior defensive end Mykel Williams Mykel Williams 6'5" | 255 lbs | DL Hardaway | 2022 State GA , one of the top 2022 prospects in the South.
Carver-Columbus:
The mighty west Georgia powerhouse has made it look easy so far in 2020. The Tigers are explosive on offense and have scored 50 points in three games this year. This is a program that breeds toughness and continues to develop talent each year. They have dominated each game in every aspect, with their closest game being a 36-14 win over Lagrange. They have an important game this weekend against Hardaway, and will end the regular season against 4-3 Troup County.
Benedictine:
They may have lost the last two games, against quality opponents in Ware County and Appling County, but the Cadets are still a team who could make a deep run in the playoffs. They’ll struggle occasionally on defense, but they’re high-powered offense could carry them pretty far. They are a team who could be a dark horse for the state title if they continue to improve over the next few weeks.
