Fantasy football players know all about the value of “keepers”, players they are allowed to keep on their roster from one season to the next. Here are some players that caught my eye as being ones any coach would be thankful to have on their roster in the latest edition of Kovo Keepers.
Christopher Agnew (SR c/o2021 DT #97) – 6’0″ 261 (5.21 – 40) (275 – Bench) (500 – Squat) – Cy Woods
Agnew completely dominated the line of scrimmage racking up several tackles for loss. He is elite vs. the run, does a great job using his hands, and has high-level quickness, mobility, and motor. Height and size issues seem to be the main thing causing college coaches to hesitate with an offer, but Agnew has shown that he can hold the point of attack vs double teams against high-level competition in District 16-6A and a non-district contest against the Katy Tigers. 1st Team All-District as a junior in 2019.
Ty Van Atta (SR c/o 2021 OT #75) – 6’0″ 240 – Cy Woods
Van Atta is described by his Head Coach Trent Faith as the “bellcow” of the offensive line and was a 1st Team All District pick as a junior in 2019. Slender athletic build with some room to pack on more weight to his frame. Extremely athletic offensive lineman with a mean streak and excellent explosion and aggression off the ball.
Christian Faulkner (SR c/o 2021 OLB/Safety #33) – 5’10” 195 (5.0 – 40) (265 – Bench) (365 – Squat) – Cy Woods
Faulkner is the true under the radar Keeper of the week. He is not someone that was discussed much in pre-season publications but is coming on for a very strong senior season. He is a converted inside linebacker and has excelled at the OLB/Safety spot in the Wildcats’ 4-2-5 defensive scheme. His experience playing inside benefits him with increased physicality for a flat area defender which was evidenced in a huge highlight-worthy hit on the pitch man against Cy Springs the week before. Pursues very well to the ball and finishes tackles well.
Darnel Green (SO c/o 2023 RB #1) – 5’10” 170 – Cy Lakes
Green impressed last year in 2019 on varsity as a freshman but this year he has taken the step as being the man in the Spartans offense. Even against the stout Cy Woods defense, Green was really able to get it going, particularly after halftime using his explosive blend of quickness, vision, and breakaway speed. A smallish-type back, he can be used as a wide receiver or in the passing game coming out of the backfield. Despite being in the midst of a winless season a star may have been born at Lakes in Darnel Green.
Donovan Carter (SO c/2023 OLB #11) – 6’2″ 180 – Cy Lakes
There was more than one freshman on varsity last year in 2019 for the Spartans, Carter started every game last year as a freshman. That feat is impressive in its own right, but Carter wasn’t just along for the ride on a varsity squad that won 5 games and was a play away from a playoff berth, he was a valuable piece that earned his keep. His strength is his range and athletic ability. He is nearly impossible to out-flank with his speed and length on the perimeter and is an aggressive and effective tackler who pursues exceedingly well to the ball and seems to be everywhere. At 6’2″ 180 he is long and lean and appears to have the frame to pack on a lot of muscle in the next several years. Donovan Carter is a name you will definitely want to remember for the years to come.
Zoel Henriquez (SR c/o 2021 OT #63) – 6’2″ 271 – Cy Lakes (5.1 – 40) (315 – Bench) (485 – Squat)
Henriquez is a 3-year starter for the Spartans and has been pivotal in opening holes for the development of Darnel Green this season. While possessing good size at 6’2″ 271, he also is extremely athletic for a big guy with a very impressive 5.1 in the 40. Being light on his feet with the ability to add more bulk to his frame certainly yields a lot of upside for Henriquez at the next level.
