The one trait, however, the great ones have is the ability to turn a reception into a game changing play. Whether it’s going up to make spectacular catch in a crucial situation or the yards after the reception production, the very best receivers are consistent big play makers. Here are six of those type of receivers in the class of 2022.
Brandon White Brandon White 5'9" | 170 lbs | WR Moeller | 2022 OH 5’9” 165 Cincinnati Moeller
Even though he isn’t big in stature, he is a giant in terms of performance. Brandon can turn a jet sweep or a reverse into six points in a heartbeat. Once he gets the ball in his arms, he displays the speed and shake to leave defenders in the dust on his way to the endzone. Especially impressive as the inside or slot receiver, White runs the corner route to perfection by separating himself from defenders and going up to haul in the football. He also shows courage and confidence catching the ball over the middle.
Will Futhey Will Futhey 6'5" | 210 lbs | TE Waverly | 2022 State OH 6’5” 200 Waverly
If you want to intimidate the opponent, send big Will off the bus first. He is a sure-handed receiver that uses his body to out position defensive backs that try to cover him one-on-one. No one is better running the fade in the redzone than Will. He goes up to highpoint the football or out muscles the defender to come up with the touchdown. Will has average speed for a wide receiver but very good speed and athleticism for a tight end, the position he will play at the next level.
Rodney Harris Rodney Harris 6'3" | 205 lbs | WR Princeton | 2022 State OH II 6’3” 195 Cincinnati Princeton
Harris is a tall and lanky possession receiver for the Vikings. He has great hands and catches the football away from his body. A nightmare for opposing cornerbacks, Rodney has deceptive speed and often runs by them when going deep. He also is impressive when running the hitch and comeback routes by setting up the defender then breaking out of the route to give his quarterback an easy target. Rodney has good body control and makes great adjustments to underthrown passes.
Kaden Saunders Kaden Saunders 5'10" | 180 lbs | WR Westerville South | 2022 State OH 5’10” 170 Westerville South
Kaden is a versatile athlete who can play either wideout or slot receiver. He displays sure and soft hands and catches the ball on rhythm while transitioning out of his route. Saunders wins the battles over the middle and can split Cover 2 safeties. He snatches the football right out of the air, weaves his way downfield, and runs by or through defenders. Kaden runs an excellent corner route in the redzone by sticking, then separating himself from the defender.
Ke’Shawn Barber Ke’Shawn Barber 6'1" | 170 lbs | WR Hughes | 2022 OH 6’1” 165 Cincinnati Hughes
This multi-position player can hurt the opposition in many ways. As a receiver, Barber can turn a short reception into a big play due to his speed and quickness. He runs the tunnel screen just as it’s drawn up and accelerates past defenders by making them miss in the openfield. These same skills make Ke’Shawn an excellent kickoff returner. Once he fills out, he will be a real force to be dealt with at the next level.
Tayshaun Mayfield Tayshaun Mayfield 6'2" | 225 lbs | ATH Hilliard Bradley | 2022 State OH 6’2” 205 Hilliard Bradley
Mayfield is a thick but athletic receiver who is a load to bring down once he has the football in his hands. Quicker than fast, no one defender can bring him down once he gets a head of steam going. Strong in the legs and hips, Mayfield simply runs through arm tackles as he makes his way downfield. Tayshaun displays sure-hands and reads his blocks well on quick screens. He is a devastating blocker that can decleat defenders when he unloads on them. There’s a good chance Mayfield may play H-Back or tight end at the collegiate level.
