So, this week I had the pleasure of watching class 4A teams fight for their playoff lives, while the big schools in 5A & 6A jockeyed for playoff position in critical late-season matchups.
I was able to scout games Thursday through Saturday this week, starting with a big second-round playoff tilt between the traditional power Gilmer, and their opponent, Godley.
#5 Gilmer Buckeyes v Godley Wildcats (Second round Playoff Game) Thursday, November 19th
The beast from the East lived up to their reputation, as Gilmer cruised past Godley (42-20) behind another strong performance from their star signal-caller.
- Brandon Tennison, Gilmer (2022 Dual-Treat QB) finished 17-of-28 passing for 228 yards and the two touchdown passes and a relatively quiet 29 yards on the ground. This electric underclassman has set numerous records with his arms and legs this year passing for over 3,000 yards and rushing for more than 600 yards. He has accumulated 40 touchdowns and now leads his team into the third round of the playoffs next week vs Sunnyvale. Tennison currently has an offer from UTSA and is drawing interest from LA Tech, with no doubt more offers to come his way soon. http://www.hudl.com/v/2EDNTY
- Mason Hunt, Gilmer (2021 Athlete) Grabbed 2 catches for 15 yards, and even though it was a statistically quiet night for the senior jack of all trades, Hunt is an all-around ballplayer who makes his presence felt. The former Gilmer QB has moved to WR this year and moved into the top 3 of this historic program’s all-purpose offensive records. This smart, versatile, hard-playing young man has a staggering 19.8 per catch average this season while accumulating 615 yards and 3 TDs receiving, Mason even found time to throw for 232 yards and a TD this season as well. Hunt has offers Harden Simmons University, Texas Southern University, and Louisiana College.https://www.hudl.com/profile/6672293/Mason-Hurt
- Dylan Fluellen, Gilmer (2021 Wide Reciever) was dynamic for the Buckeyes in this contest hauling in 5 catches, 2 for touchdowns, and 109 receiving yards. For the season Dylan is just shy of 1000 receiving yards with 967, he should get over a 1000 next week, he is also responsible for 17 touchdowns in 2020. As you can see in the clip below, Fluellen has incredible ball skills, can catch in traffic, and knows how to high point the ball. Regardless of where this young man plays at the collegiate level, I would get used to hearing his name. He currently has offers from Lamar University, Pittsburg State, Northwestern State, Houston Baptist, and Texas Southern. Other larger programs such as LA Tech and the University of Houston are showing serious interest, with more schools to follow their lead.http://www.hudl.com/v/2EfGFe
- Luke Watson Luke Watson 6'1" | 210 lbs | LB Gilmer | 2021 TX [PrepRedzone’s #46 LB], Gilmer (2021 LB) had a solid night with six tackles and one pass deflected as the black flag defense was able to slow down Godley’s high powered offense. Luke is as solid as they come at a tough position and when you watch his tape you see a tough, technically sound player. Luke does a great job finishing plays by wrapping up and driving through the tackle, he is solid against the run and dangerous off the edge as a pass rusher. Watson plays slot WR on offense which helps his overall knowledge of the game and makes him a strong coverage LB as well. Watson has committed to Stephen F Austin University but still has unfinished business at Gilmer as their playoff run is not over yet. For the year Like has 74 tackles, with 17 of them being tackles for a loss, one caused fumble, and one recovered fumble.http://www.hudl.com/v/2E9Hie
Godley came into this matchup averaging 40.5 points per game, and a big reason why is their star RB, Kolby Barlett. Even though Gilmer is loaded with talent, I couldn’t pass up this opportunity to scout one of the most productive backs in the 2021 class.
- Kolby Barlett, Godley (2021 RB) had 105 total yards from scrimmage Thursday night against the Buckeyes, 75 on the ground, and 30 receiving. This young man is smart, so smart in fact he is being recruited for his brain as well as his elusiveness on the field by three small Academically strong colleges; Hendrix College, Grinnell College, and Whittier College have all offered Barlett. For the year Kolby has racked up 1480 yards on the ground and another 479 receiving with 20 total touchdowns. Check out this ridiculous highlight reel from a week ago in the opening round of the playoffs when Barlett rushed for a whopping 241 yards on just 19 carries and 4 touchdowns.http://www.hudl.com/v/2EcsFF
