It Took a Quarter, but Monti Rolls over Robbinsdale Armstrong
MONTICELLO– We got one last Hoorah of football last night in Monticello. We took in the Section 6AAAAA 3rd place game between Robbinsdale Armstrong (4-1) and Monticello (4-2), in which we saw a game shift after the first quarter to power the Magic to victory and get their 5th win of this shortened season.
FIRST QUARTER: The only quarter owned by the Robbinsdale Armstrong Knights.
The opposing Falcons got on the board first driving down the field, and then senior RB Caleb Jones punched it in from 3 yards out. Robbinsdale Armstrong 7, Monticello 0.
One thing you’ll learn quickly about this Monticello Magic club is how much burn all of their running backs have in their step. RB/LB Caleb Schmitz was extremely crucial in getting the Magic down the field and punched in for a 7-yard touchdown for the Magic’s big scoring night. Extra point, no good. Robbinsdale Armstrong 7, Monticello 6.
We got to see the big live young arm of 2023 QB Jamen Malone who threw a 60-yard bomb to Kadyn College to give the Falcons the lead to close out the first quarter, their only lead in this one. Robbinsdale Armstrong 14, Monticello 6. End of 1st.
SECOND QUARTER: Monticello found the Magic (no pun intended) in the second quarter, overpowering Armstrong 21-0.
In the second quarter, the Calvin Schmitz and Sam Valor Sam Valor 5'10" | RB Monticello | 2021 State MN tandem kicked into high gear. Schmitz and Valor were vital in driving the Magic down the field for another touchdown in which Schmitz had that last call from 1-yard out to tie the ball game after the Magic got the 2 point conversion. Monticello 14, Robbinsdale Armstrong 14.
After a quick out by the Falcons, we saw the blitzing speed of Sam Valor Sam Valor 5'10" | RB Monticello | 2021 State MN , who is still an undecided 2021 prospect, bust open the Magic’s first lead of the game for 63 yards. Monticello 21, Robbinsdale Armstrong 14.
Later in the quarter, Schmitz using his strong body at 5’6 185 pounds to power thru the drive and punch in the Magic with his third touchdown of the game with still a half to play from 9-yards outs. Schmitz went for well over 100 yards rushing yards in this one with three touchdowns. Monticello 28, Robbinsdale Armstrong 14. Halftime.
THIRD QUARTER: Valor and company take over. Falcons show off some tricks for 6!
It was time for a new running back to strut their stuff for a Magic touchdown in the third quarter. After the power and burst of Valor and Schmitz drove down the field, Junior tailback Carson Kollies used his accelerator to burst into the Falcons end zone for a 25-yard touchdown. Monticello 35, Robbinsdale Armstrong 14.
The Falcons fooled the Magic on their next score with some of the best trickery of the game. WR Peyton Newbern found a wide-open Kayden College in the end zone for 27 yards in the end. Monticello 35, Robbinsdale Armstrong 21.
The tandem of Schmitz and Valor busted this game open in separate halves. The first half was all on Schmitz, with Valor contributing well, and the second half was the opposite. Valor would punch it from 14-yards out to keep the Magic. Valor also had a key kick return that set up the excellent field position. XP was no good. Monticello 41, Robbinsdale Armstrong 21.
FOURTH QUARTER: Falcons tried to get back in this one, but it wasn’t quite enough.
Robbinsdale Armstrong QB Jamen Malone (2023) threw some key passes to get the Falcons down the field on one of their final fourth-quarter drives. It ended with a short pass across the middle of the field to senior WR Sam Stanslaski, putting the Falcons within two scores. XP was missed. Monticello 41, Robbinsdale Armstrong 27
Sam Valor Sam Valor 5'10" | RB Monticello | 2021 State MN and Calvin Schmitz finished the dagger for Monticello. In the end, it was Valor punching it in from 13 yards out to put the knockout, punching the Falcons with the loss later in the fourth quarter. Monticello 48, Robbinsdale Armstrong 27.
You have to love the heart of this Falcons team; they didn’t quit being two scores down with little time on the clock. Jamen Malone continued his hot passing arm in the fourth quarter by driving down the field and finding WR Peyton Newbern, who threw and caught a touchdown on Friday night against Monticello for an 11-yard touchdown. Monticello 48, Robbinsdale Armstrong 35.
Armstrong would elect for the onside kick, and they got it! Unfortunately, they would gain a little ground on the Magic’s side of the field and went for it on fourth down but did not get it, cruising the Magic to a sealed victory in the third-place game in Section 6AAAAA.
