The Rockets came out hot with two scores in the first couple of possessions. Despite not playing for three consecutive weeks before tonight’s game.
Judson advanced to first place in District 27-6A, as the Steele Knights dropped to 5-3 on the season.
After tonight’s game, Judson has good fortune on a path to a district championship.
There were a few players who bedazzled the crowd during the game.
Linebacker Donnie Moody Donnie Moody 6'0" | 215 lbs | LB Judson | 2021 TX , Moody dominated the game and his name was heard over the loudspeakers all night.
Donnie shoots gaps in a flash versus the run and when he drops back into coverage he is there to make a play because he reads the quarterback’s eyes undoubtedly the best on defense.
He flies to the ball with a high motor that just needs a little bit more consistency throughout the entire game. Late in the game, the defense looked a little sluggish but that’s to be expected after three weeks of not playing.
As a defender, coaches like athletes who can run and swarm to the ball on every play.
Offensively, Judson seemed to be clicking on all cylinders. However, their run game seemed to stick out the most and has for the entire season.
The Rockets usually run the ball in their spread offense and really won’t wow you with their passing attack.
They do, however, have three running back that they use, as well as their quarterback Junior Michael Burroughs, who they use a lot on read-option plays.
Senior running back De’Anthony Lewis De’Anthony Lewis 6'0" | 195 lbs | RB Judson | 2021 TX of the Rockets leads the team in rushing yards with 785 yards rushing and 7 tds on the season.
Lewis is not a bulldozing back by any means but he does show a great burst of speed and acceleration striking gaps between offensive lineman.
He is a one-cut running back, who runs north and south and can take it all the way to the end-zone.
Defensively for Steele, DE Caleb Lewis was pretty quiet throughout the night. The star defensive end only had one big play or two throughout the entire game.
Judson does have some great underclassmen who showed a lot of potential but still need a little bit more time for improvement and coaching.
Two players that exposed talent were sophomore wide receiver Anthony Evans and defensive end Johnny Bowens.
Evans has lightning-fast speed and can catch in traffic or downfield. Evans caught multiple passes Friday night and turned simple slant plays into long yardage gains. He had 2 receptions for 95 yards on the game which means he averaged 47 yards each time he touched the ball with 1 touchdown on the night.
He leads his team in receiving yards on the season and is tied for second place for the total amount of touchdowns on the year for the Rockets.
Bowens is a large 6’3 defensive end for the Rockets and he is only a sophomore with massive amounts of potential. He has tremendous quickness and has an effective spin move coming off the edge.
He explodes off the ball, watches the ball very well and dips his shoulder low to get around the edge, and has great speed for his size. The only negative I had on Bowens was his endurance reduced a bit late in the second half of the game. This understandably probably happened because of the lack of depth at that position for the rockets and the few weeks of play that were missed.
Bowen’s teammate Junior nose tackle Nathaniel Pryor is bigger when you see him in person with his 6’2 266ilb stature. Pryor has offers to play at Incarnate Word, Lamar, Navy, and New Mexico. He pushes the pile and flies to the ball. A defender his size, you love to see athleticism and someone who can run on defense. He is definitely an imposing force on the defensive line.
However, all in all, it was a great game, the players mentioned here are still being recruited and have not fully committed to any school as of yet.
