No matter where you went, the rust was finally coming off for many quarterbacks, who played enough catch and threw at targets to last several lifetimes.
It was a time where college coaches, although they couldn’t visit the prospects, had the chance to watch plenty of film, which will tell you a lot about the skills.
This past month, throughout the state of Florida, watched several more areas come aboard – and while it will be a very limited schedule for so many, it was indeed football and enough to perhaps get the attention of college coaches who are on an extended ‘dark period’ with the athletes.
As many prospects at several positions look to make an impression, quarterbacks have made a huge leap – with new stars emerging every week.
Today, we bring you five gifted prospects who have made a lasting impression in 2020.
2023 – Rich Mellien, Naples First Baptist. When you think of the ideal quarterback to have – here is what they are talking about. This run/pass standout continues to out up big numbers because he’s a very gifted athlete, who can run and throw. Recently, he showcased a lot of what makes this young man very special when he had 165 yards rushing and three touchdowns – plus threw for two more touchdowns in a win.

2021 – Taffrey Peterman, Gulfport Boca Ciega. One of the more exciting players to watch – with his ability to run and throw the ball a long way. His arm strength, accuracy and the ability to tuck the ball in and run is what has this quality football talent on plenty of radar screens. In a win recently, he was 13-of-15 passing for 313 yards and four touchdowns.

2022 – Blayne Romano, Eustis. With more and more off-season events open to positions such as quarterbacks, it is not unusual to find prospects in every corner of the state. The competition at many showcases will certainly elevate the talent level. Here is one of those gifted football players who shows his leadership and talent every time he steps on the field – like he did in a win over Umatilla – when he went 17-of-126 for 252 yards and three touchdowns.

2021 – Tre Simmons, Valrico Bloomingdale. All season long, here is one of those catalysts who elevates the team in so many ways. His experience, leadership and talent on the offensive side of the ball has given this program some big time identity this season – with huge wins and head-turning performances – such as huge win over Lakeland when he went 14-of-21 for 210 yards and two touchdowns – plus had nine carries for 62 yards rushing and a touchdown.

2021 – Jack Smitherman, St. Petersburg Lakewood. His story has been played out a few times – and as this program made it to the playoffs, posting two consecutive regular season unbeaten teams, Smitherman is watching his plans unfold. Here is an outstanding student/athlete, who is 6-5, 230 and happen to carry a 3.6 GPA in the classroom. By the way, he moved from Miami so he would have a chance to play football – instead of being in quarantine. College coaches need to check this talented young man out. It’s a win/win – all the way around. Talented and motivated to succeed.
