Heck, one-half of the state semifinal made history in that department.
But throughout the season, one player stood tall in the class and that was Montezuma’s Eddie Burgess.
The incredibly talented junior quarterback threw for 3,803 yards, racked up 5,094 all-purpose yards, threw 59 touchdown passes and had 89 total touchdowns on the year. Yes, all of those numbers led eight-player and also stood tall regardless of the class in Iowa this year.
Burgess, also a standout on the basketball court for Montezuma, checks in at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds. He has a powerful arm and is quick on his feet, especially when it comes to making the rapid-fire decision of whether to takeoff or not.
And if Burgess is moving full-speed at you, you better watch out because he’ll plow right through you.
When watching Burgess on film, you see an incredible ability to stop, shake and move for his size. There are no throws he cannot make, including putting the ball 50-to-55 yards in the air.
Burgess had just eight interceptions on 323 attempts, averaging over 18 yards per completion. Oh, and he also played defense, making 91 total tackles including 13 for loss with two forced turnovers.
Montezuma graduates some talented weapons, but with Burgess directing the offense next year, they should once again by a high-powerful team lighting up the scoreboard.
Burgess, who is overly-athletic, isn’t just an athlete playing QB. He understands and reads defenses very well, checking off his first target and scanning for an open one.
Several others were also in the running including Don Bosco’s Cael Frost, Martensdale-St. Mary’s Jack Franey, Janesville’s Carson Pariseau Carson Pariseau 6'0" | 190 lbs | RB Janesville | 2021 IA , Montezuma’s Trey Shearer and Fremont-Mills’ Jake Malcom.
