These final weeks will be crucial to see which teams will rise up and take over their region. Playoff implications are on the line, and this week’s games will give us a look at what the playoffs could look like down the road.
Grayson/Newton:
Is there a better team in the state than the Grayson Rams? It sure doesn’t look like it. The Rams are dominating just about every team on their schedule on both offense and defense, and with Jake Garcia now at QB, the Rams look to be the clear favorite in class 7A. They play fast on defense thanks to an impressive secondary, and they have arguably the state’s top running backs in Clemson Tiger commit, Phil Mafah Phil Mafah 6'1" | 213 lbs | RB Grayson | 2021 State GA . The Newton Rams are just 3-4, but they have plenty of talent on hand including four-star athlete Nyland Green Nyland Green 6'3" | 180 lbs | DB Newton | 2021 State GA , one of the most explosive players in the country. Green will likely play offense, defense, and even special teams against Grayson this weekend.
Valdosta/Lee County:
A South Georgia matchup to know includes the 7-1 Lee County Trojans hosting the famous Valdosta Wildcats. The Trojans are continuing to play great defense and are coming off an important victory last week over Northside. The Wildcats aren’t having the season they were hoping for, but they are playing better and better each week and have won three straight. Their defense, led by four-star defensive back JaDarian Rhym, has recorded two shutouts in the last three weeks.
Douglass County vs. Rome:
In West Georgia, the Douglas County Tigers and their fantastic defense will host the 5-3 Rome Wolves. The Wolves have had a disappointing season so far for a program consistently playing for state championships, but they’ve had one of the tougher schedules in the state. Their three loses have come from impressive Cherokee, state title contender Collins Hill, and the always powerful Carrollton. They’ll have their hands full against 7-1 Douglas County, led by defensive lineman Jonathan Jefferson Jonathan Jefferson 6'3" | 237 lbs | DL Douglas County | 2021 State GA , a future Georgia Bulldog. The Tigers have given up only 20 points once so far in 8 games, and that was to Paulding County in their lone loss of the season.
Denmark vs. Gainesville:
The region is on the line in Forsyth County as the Denmark Danes, a team playing better and better each week, hosts the might Gainesville Red Elephants. The Danes are 4-3 on the season, but they’re 4-0 in region play and turned their season around when senior quarterback Aaron McLaughlin Aaron McLaughlin 6'5" | 210 lbs | QB Denmark | 2021 State GA came back healthy after the first few games. Gainesville is 3-1 in region play with their lone region loss coming last week against West Forsyth,
