We took a virtual trip to Southwest Minnesota, to Renville, to cover the Section 2 final in 9-man between the visitors Red Rock Central (2-3) and the home Jaguars of Renville County West (6-0). RCW’s roster was no stranger to me, covering them live in the 9-man quarterfinal last year in Buffalo, where they fell just short of US Bank Stadium. Red Rock Central was more of an unknown, but both teams had some dogs more particularly “Nate’s Big Dogs of the Game,” in Renville on Friday night. Please look at my big dog’s list in the season’s final game with some key players’ evaluations.
Mason Strom, DB/RB, Red Rock Central (2022)
Strom came in on a significant amount of tackles for the Falcons on Friday night, giving them a solid ball tackler that will more than likely lead this roster in his senior season. No Tape.
Ayden Gustafson, WR/RB, Renville County West (2021)
Gustafson showed off his versatility on Friday night, showing off a player that can do a little of everything. He has good speed and tangible measurables, and I think he could find a roster spot at the college level as Gustafson may be an unknown on his future plans. Had an excellent junior tape that gave me the ringing; he could be an asset in college secondary.
Mason Gode, DL/OL, Red Rock Central (2021)
Gode was the run-stuffer in the middle for Red Rock Central. Standing at a stout 6’3 275 pounds, Gode was the best player on the Falcons defense as far as stopping the Jaguars rushing attack, although the Jaguars had no issue throughout the night regardless of who was carrying the football.
Riley Ashburn, WR/DB, Renville County West (2021)
If you ask me in the two years I have watched, at least three or four kids can play college football out of Renville, with Riley Ashburn being one of them. The biggest thing I remember from last year about RCW? This guy can lay some wood! Ashburn thrived as Hoberg’s deep ball threat on Friday night. Ashburn’s hands are lethal and have a quick twitch in his footwork, and he stands at a very tall 6’4. Let’s not forget, Ashburn also does kicks for the Jaguars and blasted six touchbacks in his junior season.
Damian Osland, LB/TE, Red Rock Central (2021)
Oslund was the other Falcon aside from Gode that had a final quality game for Red Rock Central. Osland was critical at staying level at the second level for the Falcons defense and getting a few vital tackles in his last year’s game for Red Rock Central. No Tape Available
Jaden Kolker Jaden Kolker ATH Renville County West | 2021 State MN , RB/LB, Renville County West (2021)
Kolker has some powerful next level linebacker film that I have seen before and showed it on the field on Friday night. Kolker is a do it all prospect for the Jaguars but stands out big to me at linebacker as he’s a tough hitter, and on the multiple plays I watched, he didn’t just hit guys; he cracked them. Kolker has incredible vision reading in between tackles real well. Kolker’s skill matches the Division II level, but with what he has currently on the table, he could be a steal for a program like St. Johns, which is one of Kolker’s current roster opportunities of the three he has.
Brandon Hoberg, ATH, Renville County West (2021)
Hoberg certainly got my nod for game MVP in this game with four touchdowns, a large number of tackles, and ran the ball so effectively against Red Rock Central. Hoberg is the definition of what you want as far as your Athlete in 9-man football. Hoberg can scramble, throw, jump into the receiving core, catch quality balls, and is effective on defense. Hoberg has a quick burst when he sees the space he wants and is the fourth man from Renville County West that I believe has a shot at playing next level college football.
