But it wasn’t North Augusta.
The Chiefs rolled to a 35-10 victory on Friday night to advance to their first Lower State title game appearance in school history. It was a complete effort that featured a special teams touchdown to start the game, a splendid defensive showing that crippled another opposing offense and a running back doing what he has been all season.
These five Chiefs had huge games, and it’s why they’ll be playing next week, too.
NYLIEK LIVINGSTON, RUNNING BACK
Anyone who has covered the Chiefs this year inadvertently sounds like a broken record. Livingston is the reason. He went for 170 yards – his eighth 100-yard game in eight contests this season – and got into the end zone again. He had a second-half fumble, but the defense made sure it didn’t matter.
CHANDLER MCCALL, DEFENSIVE BACK
McCall has had good games before. But he’s never put a game on its head so fast like he did in this one. The junior took the opening kickoff back 99 yards for a touchdown to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead all of 15 seconds into the game. McCall was also in on 4.5 tackles throughout the evening from his spot in the secondary.
Chase Simmons Chase Simmons 6'4" | 245 lbs | DL North Myrtle Beach | 2021 State SC , DEFENSIVE END
Simmons announced on Thursday that he was going to sign with Coastal Carolina University next month. And then on Friday he went out and had a couple tackles, was in on a sack, put up another tackle for loss and had a QB hurry. It was obvious the Yellow Jackets were game-planing for him somewhat.
BILLY BARLOW, LINEBACKER
We’re sure there are other future college baseball projects playing high school football. How many of them are top-end linebackers, though? In Barlow, the Chiefs have a tough-as-nails player in the middle of the defense who continues to produce. Against North Augusta, he put up five tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a quarterback hurry.
HENRY DUKE, DEFENSIVE END
As if staring across the line at the 6-foot-4 Simmons wasn’t enough, Duke and his 6-foot-6, 235-pound frame is equally imposing. In addition to blocking out the passing lanes, Duke also added to North Augusta’s struggles with a team-high six tackles, two sacks, three tackles for loss and a QB hurry. And a game ball from the coaching staff.
